This is a school where languages are loved and cherished by the whole community. The German department is part of a large MFL Faculty, which achieves outstanding examination results. An unparalleled programme of exchanges and visits is an important part of our immersive target language culture, with students reaching a high level of linguistic competence at an early stage. Students in Year 7 choose either French or German. In Year 8 students begin a second Language choosing from French/German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. Students study two foreign languages to GCSE level. All students study a modern foreign language in the Sixth Form (where German is a popular choice); we offer an IB Diploma German Literature course to native speakers at both Standard and Higher Level, as well as German language acquisition courses.

Ofsted

"Students' personal development is outstanding. All students, including boarders, enjoy school and this is reflected in their exemplary behaviour, their mature and willing shouldering of responsibilities and in the harmonious relationships between students and between staff and students. The recent enhancement of the specialist music provision together with the resulting wider range of available activities has added significantly to students' enthusiasm for school. A real strength of the school is the way students are involved in decision-making through many opportunities such as the school council".
