What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding is what we do to promote the welfare of children and keep them safe from harm. Safeguarding is a whole school responsibility which means every teacher should know how to safeguard children and what good safeguarding in schools looks like. Safeguarding and promoting welfare includes:
- Ensuring children grow up in circumstances that provide them with safe and effective care.
- Protecting children from maltreatment
- Preventing impairment of children's mental and physical health or development
- Taking steps to enable children to have the best outcomes.
Safeguarding involves taking a variety of actions including identifying and assessing risks; and providing support across all agencies and charities that work with children and young people. Every organisation has a specific role to play in safeguarding, and it's important that they work together to ensure that vulnerable individuals are protected.

Safeguarding children
All children and young people have a right to be and feel safe in your setting or organisation, and their parents or carers also have a right to expect that their child will be safe in your organisation’s care.
Safeguarding in schools
It's essential that everybody working in a school understands their safeguarding responsibilities. Here we explain what safeguarding in schools means and why it's so important.
Safeguarding FAQs
Everyone has a responsibility for safeguarding in schools. The safeguarding lead within the school should ensure safeguarding and child protection is embedded into everything the school does, this often includes providing safeguarding training to ensure the up-to-date knowledge of other members of staff.
Key policies and procedures include child protection, preventing bullying, online safety, responding to allegations against staff, behaviour policy, and children who are missing from education. Why is safeguarding so important in schools?
Parents and carers play an important role in safeguarding by supporting their child's school, providing important information about their child, and being aware of safeguarding policies and procedures.
Schools can start by educating students about online safety, monitoring students' use of technology, and implementing appropriate filtering systems to block access to inappropriate websites.
Students should report any online material that makes them feel uncomfortable or upset to a trusted adult. Schools may have a specific route or process for students to follow to report a concern, many also offer an online reporting software that students could use.
School staff receive regular training on safeguarding, including child protection, anti-bullying and online safety. This training is designed to ensure that staff are equipped to respond effectively to any safeguarding incidents such as abuse and neglect.
