Using AI Models as an author

ChatGPT seems to have become a household name overnight and, the use of it has been widely debated, particularly in education. In the information below we will cover our current stance on the use of ChatGPT and similar AI models to create content that is being shared on our site.

Since the public release of ChatGPT late in 2022, there has been discussion around its use by both teachers and students, with some states in the US bringing in regulation to control its use. AI technology offers exciting possibilities in creating teaching resources and we have already started to see content appearing on site that has been created in part by AI. It is important to note, however, that the use of AI comes with its own concerns that you need to be aware of before jumping in to use it.

Intellectual Property

You should carefully review the terms of service of the AI model to understand what you can and cannot do with the content that it generates.

It is important to note that AI technology takes its information from sources across the web, and this adds further complexities to questions around intellectual property rights. Determining whether the content generated infringes on someone else's intellectual property rights, for example by using copyrighted material, trademarks, or patents, is a matter that typically requires human judgment and legal expertise for more complex issues.

As an author on Tes, it is your responsibility to know where your content has been sourced and to ensure that you are not in breach of someone else’s intellectual property rights.

Fact checking

Content generated by AI should not be assumed to be correct and should always be fact checked independently. Due to the way that this technology processes information, it may generate incorrect or outdated information. Without thorough checking this could compromise the quality of your content and your integrity as an author.

The human touch

Any teacher can input a query into an AI model and receive a response. Users coming to our site are, however, looking for teacher knowledge and expertise as well as information. They want to access your classroom experience and your understanding of what works, what inspires students to sit up and listen and what piques their interest. This comes with experience and cannot be replicated by AI.

There are, however, ways to use AI to help with content creation. Here are some best practice tips if you are keen to use ChatGPT, or a similar model.

1. Consider using AI in your preparation – the assistant you always wanted but never had! Use it as a tool to generate ideas, prompts, examples, plans and such. All of which you can take and build upon with your own flair.

2. Indicate in your description if you have used AI to create or assist in the creation of content. This ensures transparency between you and the buyer and builds trust.

3. Use the Tes Authors Facebook group to share tips and knowledge – and support each other. With such a new technology, things change fast so working as a collective to support each other will enhance your experience as authors.

It is important to note that the technology is still very new and still evolving. This means that any information we provide may quickly become outdated. We will make every effort to keep our advice up to date; however, we strongly recommend that you complete your own research on the technology before you use it.

If you are concerned about any of the content appearing on site, please follow the usual channels to report this through our Customer Support team who will be happy to assist.
