About British Junior Academy of Brussels
The British Junior Academy of Brussels was founded in 1992 to offer a high quality English-speaking education to children aged 3 to 14 years old. The school caters for families from the expatriate, commercial and diplomatic communities, reflecting the mix of nationalities that one would expect to find in an international centre such as Brussels.
BJAB spans two sites in the European Quarter of Brussels. Our Lower School houses classrooms for pupils from Early Years to Year 4, while our newly renovated Prep School is used by Years 5 through Year 9. We are expanding our offering to include Year 10 from September 2024, growing organically to Year 13.
The educational programme is based on the British National Curriculum, with adaptations to reflect our location in the heart of Europe. Daily French lessons are an integral part of our timetable from the Reception Year upwards, as are weekly swimming and physical education lessons. We pride ourselves on being able to offer small teaching groups throughout the school. With class sizes of around 18 pupils, we are able to provide a high degree of individual attention to each child.
The Headteacher, Mr Francis Retter, is committed to the maintenance and development of the best educational opportunities across the curriculum for all pupils. He is supported by a strong team of British-qualified teachers, a number of whom have specialist training in a range of educational disciplines such as Early Years Education; Language Support; Special Educational Needs; P.E.; I.C.T, and Science. The school is committed to maintaining a balance of subject specialists, thus ensuring that the teaching team can deliver excellent cross-curricular teaching in an encouraging, stimulating and innovative environment.
The British Junior Academy of Brussels is a member of the Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities (COBISEC) and is inspected by the International Schools Inspectorate (ISI). We are a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), a Round Square school, and a Cambridge International school.
Location
I have genuinely never worked in such a caring, supportive, challenging, fun, at times chaotic and ultimately rewarding School. Working with children from such culturally diverse backgrounds has been, for me, the best experience and has expanded my own horizons.
- BJAB TeacherBJAB is a friendly, supportive and inspirational school. Working with children from many different cultures provides a rich tapestry of experiences, creativity and fun in learning. I love that every day at BJAB is vibrant and interesting and makes teaching in such a positive, caring environment an enriching experience for all.
- BJAB TeacherBJAB has given both of our children the most precious start to their education and to life in general. It’s clear that thanks to the care, dedication, and nurturing environment that all staff create at BJAB, children grow in confidence, social skills, and kindness, as well as in academic strength. We’ve all thoroughly loved our time there.
