Job overview

Could you make a difference for young people in our community?

The Governors of North Kesteven Academy are seeking to appoint highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our Governing Board and help steer us on the next stage of our journey.

Being an Academy trust governor is a challenging but hugely rewarding role. It will give you the chance to make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community and use and develop your own professional skills in a board-level environment.

Our Academy needs and benefits from a range of professional knowledge on our governing board. Although there is no requirement for you to have an understanding of the education system, we are particularly interested in hearing from you if you have, or if you have a background in law, strategic leadership or organisational change.

As a governor, you will:

  • Use your own experience of education and life beyond school to inform conversations
  • Develop and utilise your skills in a board-level environment
  • Make a valuable contribution to education and your community
  • Support and challenge the Academy so that it improves for pupils and staff
  • Bring your unique experiences, perspectives and insights in to decision-making in the interests of the school community

What do governors do?

The governing board provides strategic leadership and accountability in schools. It has three key functions:

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the Academy and making sure its money is well spent
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the Academy and its students
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and clear strategic direction

What is the commitment?

The initial term for a governor is 4 years. Our Full Governing Body meetings are held 6 times a year, this year on Tuesday evenings, starting at 6pm. These usually last about 2 hours depending on agenda content.

We have one other regular committee for Finance & Audit which has a minimum of 6 meetings a year, again, held on Tuesdays for this academic year. Membership of this committee is based on skills of the board and is reviewed every year.

There are other ad hoc committees that are formed throughout the year where needed e.g. student or staff discipline meetings, pay review meetings etc and these are on a voluntary basis with governors who can be available at the time.

We buy into the online learning modules though the National Governors Association and can also arrange training with Lincolnshire County Council for specific areas.

Being a governor isn’t an easy role and sometimes, especially in the current education climate, there are difficult decisions to be made but it really is very rewarding.

To register an interest and to arrange an informal chat with the Headteacher please email Mr David Clarke at clerk@nkacademy.co.uk

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expect all staff share this commitment.

All posts will be subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and a check against the relevant barred lists for working in schools.

Applicants may be subject to a social media presence check.

Values and vision

We are exceptionally proud of our academy and our vibrant community of students, parents, staff and governors who work together to provide an engaging learning environment where our young people can flourish.

We encourage all our students to achieve excellence in all that they do.  We provide real support for growth, development and ambition, based on our core culture of "NK Cares". This is designed to help students and families break the boundaries of what we "can do" to make what we "aspire to do" a reality.

Our aim is to produce confident well rounded individuals and in addition to all the traditional academic subjects vocational subjects, performing arts and PE are all well represented in our curriculum with excellent facilities.

For our staff, our welcome is warm and you will be joining a friendly team of committed professionals who have high expectations of themselves and their students.  The Academy is committed to promoting and developing staff wellbeing and has a superb programme of professional development for every stage of your career.

Ofsted

“The behaviour of students is good. They are very polite, courteous and friendly, and there is a calm and purposeful atmosphere around the school. Students have positive attitudes to learning. They are prompt to lessons, bring the necessary equipment and settle down to work quickly.”
