Job overview
Grade 4, Level 1-4 (£24,335 to £25,503 p.a.) reduced pro rata to £20,895 to £21,898 (calculated on full time hours)
Permanent, ideally 37 hours per week, term time only
Part time working (at least 20 hours per week) may be considered for an exceptional candidate - please indicate preferred working pattern in your application
We are looking to recruit an exceptional, back office administrator, perhaps looking to broaden or re-direct their skillset by working closely with and supporting the School Business Manager, Finance Manager and Headteacher’s PA in a whole range of whole-school activities. This will include providing administrative support in areas such as finance, human resources / recruitment and staff induction, procurement support and health & safety reporting.
You must be a team player, be able to build relationships with all staff but also maintain strictest confidence, be dynamic and flexible, and want to seek out better ways of working. This range of activity has huge breadth, so you should have demonstrable experience in some of the key areas and be willing to learn new skills in others. You will work closely with subject matter experts but need to be able to thrive in getting on with tasks set. You will be given the freedom to set up and develop your own systems where appropriate.
You will be highly organised, utterly reliable and able to prioritise conflicting workload. You must possess very good ICT skills, be familiar with databases and different software packages, have an excellent telephone manner and be able to communicate effectively and efficiently both verbally and in writing.
Most importantly, you must have a positive approach, working in schools is hugely rewarding but can also be challenging, with no two days the same. We look forward to meeting you.
We offer a range of benefits, including:
- Full access to Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
- Training and development opportunities (CPD)
- Access to Cycle to Work scheme
- Access to an employee benefit scheme, which offers discounts across a range of products and services from health and wellbeing to leisure and retail
- Access to our Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 helpline for free and confidential advice
You will find us to the north of the historic city of York and we have an excellent learning environment and superb facilities.
The Joseph Rowntree School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
Completed application forms should be emailed to Rachel Walton, Headteacher’s PA/Senior HR Administrator at the school email address: raw@josephrowntreeschool.co.uk
Closing Date: Sunday 5 January 2025 at 12 midnight

The Joseph Rowntree School is an 11-18 comprehensive of approximately 1,300 students, including almost 200 in the Sixth Form. It is situated to the north of the attractive and historic city of York, in the village of New Earswick. It is 500 metres from the outer ring-road (A1237) and is easily accessible from the towns and villages of the Vale of York, or the cities of Leeds and Hull.
Our modern building is equipped with up to date classroom technology. We have an ongoing investment in new technologies and extensive use is made of Google classroom. We also have a state of the art sports centre and a wonderful performing arts main hall and studio.
We have extensive, attractive grounds, playing fields and an open landscape setting. Inside the building, we have fantastic facilities, which really help to support and challenge our learners. As well as the main school facilities, we also have the Wiltshire Centre (Enhanced Resource Provision) which provides highly specialised support and individual teaching and learning for students of mainstream ability who have significant and complex autism.
Our Curriculum is broad and balanced, delivered in an engaging manner which inspires students to realise their full potential and achieve the best possible outcomes. We implement systems that recognise and reward excellence, encouraging all to strive to do their best.
The school was rated ‘Good’ by OFSTED in 2017 and again in October 2022. Please see our Ofsted report for further details. We were delighted that inspectors acknowledged how well supported our students feel, the quality of our curriculum and personal development work and our extra-curricular provision. Our strong results and ambition to further improve makes this an exciting time in the development of our school.
Thank you for your interest in our school.
