We are seeking an enthusiastic, practical and versatile colleague to assist staff and pupils in our vibrant Art department. The Art department serves the whole school community and teaches pupils in year 3 through to year 13.

There are no specific technical skills that the candidate must possess as a prerequisite for this post as required training will be provided. However, a background in the visual arts and an enthusiasm for making objects are essential, as is a firm understanding of the creative process. It is also expected that the successful applicant will have good organisational abilities, and be adaptable, flexible and willing to learn.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advising the Head of Art on stock levels, placing orders as necessary and checking materials
  • Helping members of the department with preparing and setting out materials and equipment prior to the start of lessons
  • Acting as a classroom assistant in Art lessons, as required
  • Keeping the storerooms stocked and tidy
  • Displaying work around both the junior and senior schools, helping with displays for open days, examination moderation, and other events and exhibitions
  • Supporting the Head of Art and members of teaching staff to ensure the smooth-running of the Art department, and the implementation of health and safety procedures
  • Maintaining machinery, including the kiln and printing presses
  • Assisting with the set up and take down for life drawing sessions and A level gallery visit trips, if and when required
  • Any other reasonable task, as requested by the Head of Art or the senior management team

Person Specification

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in the visual arts
  • Ability to work well within a team and to have strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to meet the demands of Art education across the key stages
  • A background working in education is not necessary, however the successful candidate should show a desire and willingness to work with young people of all ages
  • No specific practical skills are required, however it would be assumed that the successful candidate would have some practical experience in creating art or craft, and an appreciation of what such work entails
  • A background/specialism in ceramics would be advantageous

It is expected that the successful candidate will be enthusiastic about working in a busy and stimulating environment, and will enjoy helping teaching staff with a wide variety of tasks. This is a job which requires someone capable of working proactively and without close supervision; somebody who, once acquainted with the department, will readily show initiative to see what is required and act accordingly.

Values and vision

Our school was founded in 1829 by Royal Charter as the junior department of the university, King’s College London, and as such, intellectual aspiration and a progressive spirit are our heritage.

Today, we offer an education of the whole person, in Mind, Spirit and Heart, the enduring ethos of our foundation. Our guiding mission is to look outwards, to the world beyond school, and to life at 25: we look to the lives we are preparing our young people to lead, so that when the time comes, they are ready to forge the pathway they choose, and to make a purposeful impact.

We aim for each of our pupils to enjoy an exhilarating adventure of learning and to pursue academic excellence within a fun, caring, welcoming environment. Academic outcomes at A level, IB and GCSE consistently place King’s amongst the very top schools nationally and globally.  Supporting our pupils to grow strong in spirit, in the shared values and qualities of character that will ground them, is equally important.
