Job overview

The Governing Body of Queen Elizabeth's High School is looking to appoint a new Chair of Governors. The Chair of Governors role would suit someone with the knowledge, skills and experience of working in an educational setting as, for example, either former or serving member of a senior leadership team in a school. Similarly, someone with existing knowledge of school or college governance seeking to apply their leadership experience would be well suited to this role.

The Chair of Governors plays a highly significant role in both determining and supporting the strategic development and leadership of the school. In doing so, it cannot be underestimated how advantageous it will be to be well placed to be giving of time, advice and guidance when working alongside school leaders and the wider school community.

Governing boards are responsible for the strategic management of a school and make decisions about a wide range of issues.

The core responsibilities of governing bodies include:

·        Ensuring accountability

·        Acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the Headteacher

·        Monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress

·        Budgetary allocation and control

·        Shaping plans for school improvement and overseeing their implementation

·        Setting the school’s aims and values

·        Appointing senior members of staff including the Headteacher

The governing board is usually split into a small number of committees, each responsible for one area such as Welfare, Resources, Curriculum and Standards. These committees meet separately from the main governing board to discuss relevant issues in more detail. Discussion is then fed back at a full governing board meeting.

A school governing board is made up of representatives from the school, the parents, the local authority and the local community.

As a Chair, you will also be responsible for:

·        Nurturing a strong and supportive culture within the governing board

·        Delegating tasks and ensuring the governing board fulfils its function

·        Setting agendas and goals for governor meetings

·        Evaluating performance of the governing board on a regular basis

·        Liaising closely with the Headteacher

·        Ensuring governors act in line with the board’s agreed code of conduct

After joining the board, you will have ample opportunity to learn more about the school and your fellow governors. Training will be provided to support you in this role.

Queen Elizabeth’s is one of Lincolnshire’s 16 grammar schools and the school’s core values of Tradition, Achievement, and Opportunity revolve around ensuring our students are well cared for, academically challenged and, afforded access to a broad range of fulfilling and enriching co-curricular activities. As a result, students at QEHS feel safe, flourish within an environment of academic rigor, and develop interests and skills which will go on to serve them well throughout their lives.

The governing body of QEHS is responsible for setting the ethos, vision and strategy of the school, working with the Headteacher and Leadership Team to identify areas where the school needs to improve further and planning how to make those improvements. We strive to ensure that the educational performance of the students is strong and that the budget is used properly and effectively. The 2023 A Level and GCSE results were the strongest in years with the school being in the top 20% of secondary schools in the East Midlands.

First established in 1589, Queen Elizabeth’s High School is a grammar school located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The school has existed in its current guise as a co-educational grammar school since 1983, when the two single-sex schools merged into a single institution. A state grammar school, Queen Elizabeth’s is academically selective in its admissions but charges no fees for tuition. With around 1200 pupils on roll in a co-educational setting aged 11-18, the school is noticeably larger than most secondary schools, around 150 of these residing in the school sixth form. Queen Elizabeth’s has seen extensive modernisation and development over the years.
