Abbey College Manchester was founded in 1990 and over the past twenty four years has become one of the leading providers of independent sixth form education in Greater Manchester. There are approximately 220 students in the college. Within this around 30% are from the Manchester area with the remainder coming from 25 different countries across Europe; Africa; Asia and the Americas. 

Clydesdale House

Currently 72 students live in our Senior Boarding House (Clydesdale House) which is a 10-minute walk from the main college building. Only students above the age of 16 on September 1st  may reside in this boarding house. The students live in flat clusters on four floors at Clydesdale House which are accessed only by ACM students and boarding staff. The kitchen facilities are on the third floor in a secured kitchen, where dinner is cooked and served to the students. About 35 students have cooked food each evening. 

Description of the post

 The role of the cook is to provide the evening meal for the boarding students in Clydesdale. The duty is six days per week from 2-9pm. The normal days of working are Sunday to Friday.

Responsibilities:

1.   Establish a varied menu on a 3-4 week rotation, including daily vegetarian options, and display this menu for students

2.   Provide a menu that reflects the culinary tastes of our students

3.   Assist in the preparation of sandwiches/salad/pasta that form part of our students' lunches.

4.   To adhere to the Safeguarding responsibilities as indicated by Boarding National Minimum Standards 2022.

5.   Ensure correct ingredients ordered/purchased in accordance with the menu from trusted outlets

6.   Highlight any potential allergens/intolerances within the food to students via information board

7.   Check food condition and best before dates daily and ensure any “bad” food is disposed of correctly

8.   Ensure stock rotation so oldest food used first and menu to incorporate this

9.   Check fridge temperature as per guidelines

10. Check freezer temperature as per guidelines

11. Ensure kitchen area clean prior to commencing food preparation (daily)

12. Prepare all food for the menu

13. Ensure no cross contamination of food types – separate boards for meat, bread and vegetables

14. Ensure work surfaces and equipment is cleaned throughout preparation and serving

15. Ensure food core temperature is checked and maintained to guidelines throughout serving period

16. Ensure kitchen area/oven cleaned after food service

17. Liaise with Almero to ensure oven and kitchen thoroughly cleaned on regular basis

18. Liaise with Assistant Principal and notify immediately of any issues or concerns and ensure best practice is adhered to by all Houseparents when using the kitchen area.

Person specification

1. Personal skills and qualities

  • High levels of personal and professional integrity
  • Personal warmth, good rapport with students and colleagues
  • Ability to cook nutritious food and provide an interesting and appropriate menu


2. Knowledge and experience

  • Hygiene certificate level 2 or higher
  • Experience of cooking in this type of environment i.e. a school canteen or equivalent

Remuneration

  • The hourly rate is £13.59 (sessional)


Hours of work

  • The post is 42 hours per week; Sunday to Friday evenings 2pm-9pm. Additional hours maybe required if cover is needed. Clydesdale will be closed for the Christmas holiday and during July and August.

 Holidays

  • The college summer holidays (July/August) and Christmas holidays (three weeks)

Checks and Training

• Enhanced DBS checks to ascertain successful candidates suitability to work with children will be carried out. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and therefore all convictions, cautions and bindovers, including those regarded as ‘spent’ must be declared.

• Online searches will be carried out on candidates for any unsuitable content by or about candidates.

• Three written & verbal references from previous employers and a personal reference will be sought. Referees will be asked about candidates suitability to work with children and whether they know of any disciplinary offences relating to children or young persons and whether candidates have been the subject of any child protection allegations or concerns and if so the outcome of any enquiry or disciplinary procedure.

• Candidates full employment history will be checked, any significant gaps will require explanation and proof of any relevant qualifications will need to be provided.
