The Deputy Head (Pastoral & Safeguarding) will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team(SLT), responsible for the provision of outstanding pastoral support for all students(ensuring that they exceed potential in all aspects of School life and acquire the necessary life skills) and to take the lead responsibility of Safeguarding and Child Protection as the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the whole school for the upcoming academic year.This role will span across the senior school this year, and will have some teaching responsibilities as well.
Pastoral Leadership/Management and Safeguarding
- Acting as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (Senior School)
- Taking responsibility for embedding a culture of safeguarding across every area of the school and promoting a culture of “it could happen here”.
- Ensuring that Brighton College values are fully-embedded into the College community.
- Developing and managing target-setting strategies, in conjunction with the Deputy Head Academic, to enhance the pupil experience,
- Coordinating an effective implementation of the PSHE and RSE programmes in conjunction with the /Tutors and once the school grows sufficiently, Heads of Year.
- Leading on all areas relating to behaviour management in the Senior School.
- Ensuring meticulous record-keeping of all behavioural, disciplinary and safeguarding matters in line with Brighton College, BSO and other required international and in-territory inspection requirements.
- Working with administrative staff to oversee that the an accurate log of all complaints, is maintained.Managing the cross-phase liaison with the Prep School and Pre-Prep Leadership Team in order to ensure smooth transition arrangements for all areas of pastoral care.
- Leading on the establishment of pupil committees, such as the Pupil Council and other systems, to ensure pupil voice feeds into school improvement.
- Overseeing selection and training of Senior school pupil leadership positions such as – Head Boy, Head Girl , Prefects and heads of houses
- Retaining oversight for all work relating to charity and social responsibility.
- Producing an annual update of all school policies and documentation in relation to pastoral care and safeguarding at the senior school
- Organising and running pastoral information events for pupils and parents.
- To act as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for the senior school of Brighton College (Singapore)
- To lead the Senior School Safeguarding team.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues across the organisation, including the Designated Safeguarding Lead in the Prep School and the Regional Safeguarding Lead, as well as external agencies, to ensure that all safeguarding policies and procedures are rigorously applied and that every pupil in our care is protected and supported
- Coordinating the Senior School assembly rota.
- Creating a stimulating and effective Tutor Time programme.
- Coordinating the implementation and monitoring of Komodo, the pupil well-being platform.
- Monitoring Senior School attendance.
- Working closely with the Deputy Head (Academic) to ensure the Senior School has robust and effective reporting processes.
- Coordinating Senior School Rewards and SanctionsResponsibility for the delivery of the PSHE and RSE curriculum in the Senior School,including delivering Pastoral drop-down sessions.
- Contributing to the whole-school culture of pastoral care and safeguarding.
- Liaising with parents and outside agencies, as appropriate, to develop positive relationships outside the College community.
- Contributing to the SLT’s role in monitoring and evaluating teaching and learning throughout the school.
- Implementing and recording regular Site Security Audits, identifying any weaknesses in the school’s systems/structures.
- Maintaining and enhancing the quality of the College’s operational effectiveness and contributing to the effective performance of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Ensuring the Brighton College values are fully embedded into the College community.
- Contributing to the collection and dissemination of all information relating to the College for the purposes of marketing and communication.
- Contributing to the strategic planning of the whole College in order to implement the College vision.
- Deputising for the Head in their absence.
- Any other reasonable management request.
Terms of Employment
- During term time the incumbent should always be available (during school or college hours) for staff in the school or college to discuss any safeguarding concerns.
- Whilst the incumbent would be expected to be available in person, it is a matter for individual schools and colleges, working with the incumbent, to define what “available” means and whether in exceptional circumstances availability via phone and/or virtual communication platform is acceptable
- Additional working hours during term break as and when work required
The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding; Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head of School or indeed to the Regional CEO or Safeguarding Manager - Asia so that a referral can be made accordingly to the statutory services.

In August 2020 Brighton College opened the doors of its fifth sister school in Singapore, one of South East Asia’s most vibrant and successful cities.
