Teaching & Learning

Due to higher than expected enrollment, we are seeking to appoint a Primary School English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher and a Secondary aged EAL specialist to join us this academic year. This is an exciting opportunity to join our expanding EAL team and build on the strong foundations that have been implemented so far. Opportunities to take on a leadership role as the team grows is a strong likelihood.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate a passion for learning and teaching
  • Have experience in teaching EAL students, across primary.
  • Have strong pastoral skills and experience in supporting students who are new to the English Language
  • Have experience in delivering effective 1-1 and small group sessions for EAL students
  • Be able to set, support and track progress from individual starting points by writing individual language plans and using school tracking software
  • Provide training for class teachers in support EAL students across all areas of the curriculum
  • Hold a CELTA, TEFL or TESOL teaching certificate or equivalent.

Job Purpose

  • Ensure that lessons are well planned, structured and delivered to maintain pace, motivation and challenge.
  • Plan and teach lessons that enable access to all learning needs and differentiate appropriately.
  • Ensure marking, assessment and feedback is timely, appropriate and meaningful.
  • Reflect on teaching practice to adapt to student needs, including barriers to learning related to SEN and EAL pupil experience.
  • Monitor and intervene when teaching to ensure sound learning and discipline and maintain a safe environment in which students feel confident
  • Record and report on pupil progress and attainment, based upon accurate and regular assessment.
  • Be able to demonstrate outstanding subject and curriculum knowledge.
  • To establish excellent working relationships with students that engage with students as individuals.
  • Establish excellent relationships and communication with parents.
  • Participate in staff, departmental and pastoral meetings
  • Be responsible for students' welfare, progress and attainment.
  • To implement school policy for rewards and sanctions.

Professional Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Have knowledge of and keep up to date with the English national curriculum.
  • Understand how students’ learning is affected by their physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development
  • Select and make good use of ICT skills for classroom and management support
  • Understand and know how national and local comparative and school data including National Curriculum test data can be used to set clear targets for students’ achievement
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues and parents
  • Participate in the Performance Management Cycle
  • Participate as required in meetings with professional colleagues and parents in respect of duties and responsibilities of the post
  • Take responsibility for your own professional development
  • Be aware and mindful of all aspects of health and safety in relations to your duties
  • Ensure that all school policies are properly implemented.

Assessment and Reporting:

  • Assess and report each student’s progress systematically with reference to the school’s policy and practice, including the social progress of each child and use the results to inform future planning
  • Mark and monitor classwork and homework, in line with the school’s current practices
  • Make use of attainment records and data to set targets and monitor student progress.
  • Give relevant and regular feedback to students to aid progress.
  • Provide reports on individual progress to middle/senior leaders and parents as required.

Professional Development

  • Engage in internal school training days to improve teaching practice and develop departmental strategies.
  • Look to regularly assess teaching and learning against global and local trends in education practice.
  • Search for CPD opportunities to develop personal teaching and learning practice, and actively look to disseminate new knowledge to staff. Additional professional responsibilities
  • Contribute to the wider school environment by participating in house and community projects.
  • Offer extra-curricular activities to students after school.
  • Accompany students on residential trips and academic trips.
  • Actively be responsible for the safeguarding and welfare of RBIS students.
