Job overview
GRADUATE ASSISTANT
Starting in September 2024
We have vacancies for several well-qualified and enthusiastic graduates to join our staff for one academic year starting in September 2024
The roles will involve supporting children in class, in activities and games, and taking an interest in the boarding life of the School. There is an expectation that, with the support of the Head of Department of the Graduate Assistant’s specialist subject or the Head of Year in the Junior School, Graduate Assistants will, in time, deliver some lessons. An ability to assist with Sport and the co-curricular life of the school is vital.
Applicants are welcomed from any subject specialism. In 2024 we are particularly looking for applicants for Drama, Sport and Creative Arts. All roles will suit those seeking further experience of working with children prior to teacher training. The graduate assistant role can become a two year programme for successful applicants after the first year. In the second year of the program applicants would become a Graduate Teacher and undertake the PGTA to gain QTS. A remuneration package of £28000 is offered which includes salary, inclusive of holiday, of £14,650. Single accommodation within a shared house will be provided together with all meals taken with students during term-time. The graduates will enjoy accommodation and living expenses which include payment of all utility bills and council tax. Personal phone calls and lines, and television subscription are not covered.
Freemen’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About City of London Freemen's School
City of London Freemen’s School is a mixed, selective, non-denominational all-through school with sixth form situated in Ashtead, Surrey. It is an independent boarding school owned by the City of London Corporation, which provides 16 of its 22 governors. The school will provide 920 places for primary, secondary and sixth-form students aged 7-18, when fully subscribed.
City of London Freemen’s was founded in 1854 in Brixton, where it educated both boys and girls. It moved to its current Surrey location in 1926, expanding in size to accommodate increasing numbers of students.
"Our mission is to learn, lead and make a difference. We live and breathe that ethos every day here at Freemen’s: staff and students. Academic excellence is a given, that’s the foundation of any good school and we are very firmly rooted in a tradition of achievement. However, good grades and progression to top universities only make up part of the picture here in Ashtead Park. We want to develop balanced, compassionate, rounded and unpretentious young people, who will go out into the wider world and leave a lasting impact: young people who can and will make a difference throughout their lives."
Headmaster, Roland Martin
