Job description

A well-qualified Graduate and outstanding, inspirational Hockey Coach is required to take the leading role in the continued development of Hockey, as one of the School’s major sports.

The ideal candidate will also be able to coach a second sport, ideally cricket or tennis. The Head of Hockey will be expected to contribute fully to the wider co-curricular and boarding life of the School, including boarding duties and Saturday fixtures during term time.

A commitment to the values and the expectations of the boarding community and to the welfare of the pupils is a vital component of the job. In addition to coaching, all full-time members of staff are expected to play a full role in the extra-curricular and pastoral life of the school. The applicant will be expected to have strong administrative and organisational skills.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Main responsibilities:

There is an expectation that the Head of Hockey will support other sports and commit to the wider coaching of sport at Giggleswick School.

  • Oversee the management of the Hockey programme and manage staff in charge of school teams
  • Develop and deliver the staff CPD programme for all Hockey staff
  • Work with the Director of Sport on the annual budget for Hockey
  • Work with the Director of Sport to develop a strategic development plan for Hockey, in line with the school’s overarching aims for sport
  • Increase profile of Giggleswick as a destination for aspiring Hockey players

Coaching:

  • To be an exemplary coach of Hockey, leading by example and supporting other staff in their coaching development To work closely with the Director of Sport to ensure that a consistent, coherent strategy for Hockey and player development exists in the school including S&C sessions and offseason training
  • To work with the other coaching staff in junior age groups to develop Hockey at Giggleswick School
  • Contribute to the Elite Sports Programme to support player development
  • To coach year-round including the planning and execution of a pre-season programme for all players

Administration:

  • Plan an appropriate fixture list for all teams, including targeting specific, appropriate regional and national competitions Be responsible for the logistical organisation of fixtures through SOCS Plan and oversee the successful resourcing of equipment to support the Hockey programme
  • Plan and oversee the provision of Hockey year-round to support players
  • Organise the House Varsity Hockey competition formats
  • Ensure record-keeping and publications of results, reports and achievements
  • Ensure that all Hockey activity in the school adheres to School and National Governing Body Guidelines for welfare, health and safety
  • Make arrangements for, and deliver, preseason training camps and tours in consultation with the Director of Sport. This may coincide with some school holidays Write an annual/termly report for the Director of Sport
  • Discuss with the Director of Sport any CPD your coaches require and encourage them to attend coach education opportunities

Recruitment and outreach:

  • Maintain and strengthen external links with England Performance Centres and regional sides including North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Lancashire
  • Assist with the awarding of Sports Scholarships and identification of talented Hockey players
  • Develop a relationship with prep and primary schools, as well as local clubs. This may include coaching or umpiring school/club matches
  • To forge links with local clubs and representative teams, and others as necessary to ensure that opportunities are made for individuals to gain representative honours
  • To be responsible for the creation and development of a community based Giggleswick & Settle Junior Hockey club. This will provide an additional income and involve evening and weekend commitments

Other duties:

  • All staff are expected to follow the Staff Code of Conduct and to follow the guidance laid out in the staff handbook
  • The School has a regular pattern of assemblies and Chapel services which staff are expected to attend. Staff support students at major School functions such as drama productions, Spring Concert and Sports Day
  • Other tasks may develop and been added to this role, following suitable training and subject to time available
  • Be fully knowledgeable of the Health and Safety regulations in the area of responsibility
  • Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken may not have been identified. Employees will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from the Head to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description
  • This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the Manager and member of staff and will be reviewed annually
