Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Head of Inclusion to oversee both the English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Additional Educational Needs (AEN) programmes for our children in DUCKS (aged 2-7 years). As the successful candidate, you will sit on the extended leadership team and play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive environment, building teacher capacity in inclusive teaching, and ensuring all children receive the support they need to thrive. You will collaborate with teachers, support staff, students, families, and external professionals to provide comprehensive learning and language

 

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the EAL and AEN Programmes: As a member of the Student Support Services Team, you will lead and manage both the English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Additional Educational Needs (AEN) programmes for the children in DUCKS, with a key focus in Years 1 and 2.

 

Provide Comprehensive Learning and Language Support: You will use assessment data strategically to track student progress in both language acquisition and learning development, to inform teaching practices and ensure that students receive tailored learning and language support that addresses their individual needs and promotes both academic and personal growth.

 

Tiered Support: You will have a strong understanding of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework, applying it to guide targeted interventions and tiered support based on individual student needs.

 

Foster an Inclusive Environment: To guide and support colleagues in the promotion of an inclusive learning environment where all students feel supported and included, regardless of their language abilities or educational needs.

 

Build Teacher Capacity: You will provide professional development, coaching, and a collaborative team teaching approach to support staff to adapt and differentiate instruction based on student needs, equipping them with skills and strategies needed for effective inclusive teaching.

 

Collaborate with Key Stakeholders: You will work closely with teachers, support staff, students, families, and external professionals (e.g. Educational Psychologists, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists) to ensure clear communication regarding student progress and cohesive and integrated support for students.

 

Language Support Assistants (LSAs): You will work with Language Support Assistants to implement personalised learning strategies for students with language needs.

 

Timetabling: You will develop, maintain, and implement timetables for both EAL and AEN programmes and in-class support, ensuring efficient use of resources and staff.

 

Best Practice: You will stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices in inclusive education, EAL and AEN strategies, and primary education.

 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be an excellent and creative classroom practitioner
  • Have substantial experience working within the Early Years Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1, with a deep understanding of early childhood development and learning strategies tailored to young learners
  • Have strong leadership skills, with proven experience in fostering inclusive educational practices that meet the diverse needs of students. A deep understanding of both AEN and EAL strategies, along with the ability to effectively manage and mentor a team, ensuring collaborative implementation of personalised language and learning support strategies. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work alongside educators, support staff, and external professionals are essential for this role
  • Have the ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and demonstrate leadership in a school setting

 

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience in SEN coordination and AEN leadership within in an Early Years/KS1 setting
  • Certification and experience in English as an Additional Language (EAL):

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate Certification in Inclusive Education or SEN Coordination (NASENCO)
  • Postgraduate Certification in English as an Additional Language (EAL)
