The Duke of York's Royal Military School seeks a dynamic leader to enhance our PE curriculum, inspire staff, ensure student progression, and foster external partnerships. The Head of PE will lead the curriculum for KS3-5, inspiring staff, ensuring student progression, maintaining facilities, and managing resources while enhancing co-curricular programs.

In addition, the successful candidate will be required to play an active role in boarding School life, including: tutoring; clubs and activities during the day; boarding duties in the evenings and at weekends. In return, a DOYRMS allowance of £6,337 per annum will be payable.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• To plan, deliver and assess engaging and challenging PE and Games curriculum to KS3, 4 and 5.

• Successful leadership of the PE Faculty; inspiring and empowering the team.

• Ensure the vision for the subject areas is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon - promoting collaboration between teachers.

• To ensure complete curriculum coverage, continuity and progression in PE and Games - for all students, including those with high ability and those with additional needs.

• To analyse behaviour and assessment data to plan, designing and evaluating interventions that support students’ progress. Communicate effectively with parents in regard to students’ achievements and well-being.

• To evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching and learning of subject curriculums, through regular observation activities, in addition to the annual performance management of reviewees.

• Contribute to the professional development of colleagues through coaching and mentoring, demonstrating effective practice, and providing support and feedback.

• Ensure effective induction for new staff and career development for all, including those at the start of the profession.

• Collaborate with Heads of Department and other professional communities, to exploit wider curriculum application opportunities, including participation in ALG.

• To provide continuity of learning should students or staff be absent from School.

• Work closely with the Director of Sport, in the development of co-curricular sporting activity; ensuring the provision of appropriate sports programmes aimed at engaging all pupils in games sessions and other recreational sports activities, that promote competition and wellbeing

About The Duke of York's Royal Military School

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School is a mixed, non-denominational, state secondary boarding school with sixth form situated in Dover, Kent. It is a sponsor-led academy supported by a single-academy trust. A smaller than average secondary school, it provides 500+ places for students between the ages of 11 and 18 when fully subscribed.

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School has roots going back to the early 19th century. It was first built in 1801 by the Duke of York in Chelsea, before relocating to its current Dover site in 1908. The school reopened as an academy in September 2010, becoming the first full state boarding academy. Both the current school and its predecessor have links with the military.

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School prides itself on being a unique establishment rooted in military traditions. The military ethos helps students to develop character and life skills, supporting them to become resilient, skilled, well-educated young people. 

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School was previously only open to children whose parents were members of the armed forces in the UK, but entry was extended to civilian families when the school converted to academy status.
