About Role

The HS Group Leader is an outstanding leader, responsible for the overall standards of teaching and learning in the group area. This person is not only an exceptional teacher, but also is committed to the Dehong values and philosophy in creating a bilingual, bicultural learning environment. This person communicates effectively with their team and creates a positive environment for staff to flourish and for students to learn.

The HS Group Leader is responsible for the HS curriculum and reports directly into the HS coordinator.

Teaching and Learning

•   To promote outstanding teaching and learning in the Group that focuses on creating a bilingual, bicultural experience that inspires and will enthuse students to learn.

•   Ensure appropriate Unit Planners are in place for all areas of the HS Group 4 Curriculum, including Pioneer Year, A-Level and IBDP across all Science areas.

•   Responsible for the integration of the HS standards into the HS Science curriculum, including the future oversight of Labor Tech and IT.

•   Responsible for the alignment of the HS standards for G10-12 Group 4.

•   Be familiar with and comply with IBDP, A-Level, EDB and SMEC regulations.

•   Effective monitoring of student progress on an individual or group basis (e.g. by teaching group, gender, etc.)

•   Ensure appropriate monitoring activities are undertaken through regular paired lesson observations (at least one per teacher per term), and through scrutiny of students' work, including homework, and teachers' planning, marking and assessment, in line with school monitoring policies.

•   Ensure accuracy and consistency in predicted vs actual IBDP and A-Level grades.

•   Ensure positive behaviour for learning policies and procedures are implemented to enable effective learning to take place.

Team Management

•   Creating a positive culture in the whole group; to be an enthusiastic role-model with a passion for their group and to be accountable for student progress and achievement within the group area.

•   Line manage the HS Lab Technician and have over-sight for the running of all high school labs, purchasing and chemical storage.

•   Ensure school's assessment framework is adhered to by the HS group team.

•   Ensure the group team's teaching and support commitments are effectively timetabled and roomed.

•   Attend regular line management meetings with the linked SLT member.

•   Contribute and lead regular group meetings with teaching and learning as a standard agenda item.

•   To work in tandem with the Middle School Group Leader, running group leader meetings in tandem using the Secondary School meeting rotation model.

•   Provide agendas and minutes of these meetings to all members of the group team, and to the SLT if required.

•   Contribute to the Group development plan that mirrors the school development plan.

Other Responsibilities

•   Ensure effective management and deployment of financial, physical and human resources.

•   Cover arrangements, including setting appropriate cover work for absent staff if necessary.

•   Through monitoring of assessment data, ensure appropriate targets for progress and attainment are set; that attainment is appropriate for specific groups of students, particularly EAL; identify areas of actual or potential underachievement and implement appropriate strategies to address these.

•   Support in the mentoring of Oxbridge and Ivy League students.

•   Ensure appropriate and effective induction of teaching staff new to the group team.

•   Ensure appropriate measures are in place to coach, mentor, support and guide new teachers to the group.

•   Ensure that the group provides appropriate support for students applying for relevant university course, especially those applying to elite universities. 

•   Ensure that the group provides appropriate outlets for the development of the Dehong Difference, including supporting the Qidi programme and House Competition.

•   Lead and maintain SchoolBox, particularly the group area section and produce a short weekly blog for parents.

Post-holder Qualifications, Experience

At least two years post qualification experience and specific qualifications to support

•   Bachelor or above degree is required 

•   PGCE or QTS, Teaching License from non-UK countries are required
