Job overview

St Hilary’s is an independent preparatory day school which provides a stimulating, safe environment in which boys and girls can develop, be happy and flourish.

Situated in the heart of Godalming, St Hilary’s educates boys and girls from 2 - 11 years. The school prides itself in providing an outstanding all-round education, equipping pupils not only with strong academic standards but also the essential qualities and skills required beyond their time at school.

The school offers a prep school education that will give children opportunities to equip them intellectually, physically, culturally and emotionally for the challenges of the twenty first century.

Inspected by The Independent Schools’ Inspectorate in February 2024 St Hilary’s met the expected standards for all five focus areas assessed in the inspection:

  • Leadership and management, and governance.
  • Quality of education, training and recreation.
  • Pupils’ physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Pupils’ social and economic wellbeing and contribution to society.
  • Safeguarding.

This recognition is a testament to the dedication of staff, the unwavering support of parents and the outstanding achievements of the boys and girls. The school has created an environment where every child can thrive, both academically and personally. The Governors seek candidates with strong personal qualities as well as proven skills in leadership, management and administration for the post of Head for September 2025. Whilst a September 2025 start date is desirable, there would be some flexibility for the right candidate and a later start date would be possible.

St Hilary’s enjoys an excellent reputation as a highly successful Prep School with a rich heritage, and the Governors wish to appoint an exceptional candidate who can develop that reputation and lead the school to an exciting and illustrious future.

An excellent package is available for the successful candidate and reflects the importance of the position.

Requests for an Application Form should be directed to James Barnes at JBC at barnesjea@gmail.com, to whom any enquiries should be made.

The deadline for applications is noon, Friday 24 January 2024.

Interviews will take place in the week beginning 24 February 2025.

This post is subject to satisfactory references, which will be requested prior to interview, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Barred List check, evidence of qualifications, plus verification of the right to work in the UK.

St Hilary’s School is part of the St Edmund’s School Trust Ltd, registered charity no 278301 and an equal-opportunities employer. The school is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.
