Job overview

St George’s is an exceptional day and boarding school for around 270 girls aged 11-18 that provides a broad, balanced and contemporary all-round education for girls primarily from the local area, London, the South East of England, but also from around the globe.

We believe strongly in the unique talents of every girl that joins St George’s and have developed a reputation for helping our pupils be the very best that they can be, academically, in sport and the arts, and in their personal development; St George’s girls leave school Confident, Capable and Connected.

Situated in Ascot, Berkshire, the school benefits from a beautiful, green 30-acre site with outstanding facilities that feels rural yet is conveniently located close to London, the M25 and international airports. We have a network of school bus services covering the local area and west London.

The school has a rich heritage and we have recently celebrated 100 years of excellence in girls’ education, but we unremittingly look to the future. We want the girls to work hard, have fun, and engage in their academic journey and co-curricular activities.

We are enthusiastic early adopters of technology in education, a Google Reference School, and we nurture technological literacy while encouraging discernment and wisdom about its influence. We value tradition and culture, provide a broad curriculum and over the past few years have invested greatly in the school to modernise the facilities we offer.

Over the last 8 years, under the leadership of our current Head, Liz Hewer, St George’s has built upon strong foundations to become one of the best possible choices of schools for girls’ education.

We now seek an exceptional leader with the right blend of experience, enthusiasm and personality to drive the next chapter of St George’s history. If you are excited by this challenging and rewarding opportunity, we look forward to hearing from you.

The Board of Governors is looking to appoint an empathetic and inspiring senior leader to steer St George's through an ever-changing educational landscape. This is a chance for an existing Head or for someone with the potential to step up to headship, to join St George's and lead the School community forward into its next stage of development.

The ideal start date for the new Head is September 2025. This will be negotiable depending on the successful candidate's notice period.

A competitive package accompanies the post, dependent on experience. Family accommodation is included on site.

About St George's School

St George’s is a girls’ independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 years. We are located approximately 25 miles west of central London on a beautiful, leafy 30 acre site, within walking distance of Ascot High Street. We are a welcoming school with a warm sense of community and visitors often comment on the perceptible supportive and cheerful atmosphere.

Most girls join St George's in Year 7; there are around 35 girls in each of the first two years and we keep class sizes deliberately small so that each girl is individually known. An additional class is added at Year 9 with girls joining from 13+ prep schools and girls may also join in the Sixth Form, and occasionally in Year 8 and Year 10.

We believe that a happy and successful school is one where all pupils have the opportunities to develop their strengths. The richness of opportunities within and outside the classroom are fundamental elements of the St George's experience. This allows the girls to foster the confidence, independence and academic curiosity that lead to success.

Our academic results are impressive, with the 'value-added' in public examinations a real strength. We understand how girls learn effectively and we regularly add at least one grade higher at GCSE and A Level than baseline testing would suggest. As the girls progress through the school, bespoke advice on subject options, universities and careers as part of a thorough academic tracking process, gives each girl and her parents a sense of where her strengths lie and where she should be heading.

We also offer an extensive range of opportunities, clubs and activities with a significant focus on the arts, music and sport. The girls work hard and play hard, they value each other's abilities and there is a positive an supportive pastoral and boarding ethos.

St George's is a place where girls flourish academically, creatively, physically and morally , a place where risks can be taken, lessons are learnt and challenges are welcomed. We strive for the very best for our girls and by developing their love of learning, their academic potential and their individual talents, we are able to nurture them to become happy, responsible, well balanced and resilient young women in the twenty-first century.
