The Island Free School is a mixed, non selective, non denominational secondary school (without sixth form) based in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. It is a free school supported by a single academy trust, set up by experienced teachers, parents and members of the local business community.

The school opened in 2014 in response to poor academic results on the Island and has proved popular with parents, being oversubscribed in all year groups.

The school is smaller than average offering 125 places in each year group, and reached capacity at 625 pupils in September 2018. The school has an excellent pupil to staff ratio and teachers have the opportunity to get to know every pupil.

Values and vision

We raise expectations and encourage independent thinking

· Pupils follow an academic curriculum built around the English Baccalaureate enhanced by sports, creative and community activities.

·  As a music specialist school, everyone has the opportunity to play an instrument.

·  Our pupils feel valued and proud to be part of the learning community.

·  We expect pupils to work hard and behave in an exemplary way.

·  We provide unrivalled teaching, resources and pastoral care.

·  Small class sizes give each teacher the opportunity to get to know every pupil.

· All our teachers are passionate about learning. Staff are our most valuable asset and we ensure that they feel valued and supported.

That’s why our motto is 'nulli secundus'  Latin, meaning ‘second to none’.

We are an Island school for Island families, giving parents a real choice for their child’s education.

Ofsted

Our school was inspected in June 2017 and is rated Good in all areas with Outstanding personal development, behaviour and welfare.
