About St Margaret's Prep School, Calne

St Margaret's  Prep is a thriving independent day school for boys and girls aged 2-11 which was established in 1873. We moved to our current premises in 1940 and have gradually grown to what we are today – a happy and vibrant school of around 180 pupils with broadly equal numbers of boys and girls.

At St Margaret’s, we believe our duty is to prepare the children in our care to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world; to equip them with the life skills and attributes that will allow them to flourish in their senior schools and beyond.

We offer a holistic and balanced education, with strong values at its heart. These values provide a framework for our children as they interact with one another, experiencing the challenges and achievements of their educational journey with us. Our aim of ‘Inspiring Excellence’ is central to our commitment to ensure that each pupil aspires to fulfil his or her potential.

There is one class per year in Pre-Prep (KS1 including Kindergarten) and 2 per year in Prep (KS2). The school shares an impressive 27-acre campus and facilities with St Mary’s School, Calne.

The facilities offer first class opportunities to challenge and stimulate the children in their learning. Classes are housed in attractive purpose-built teaching rooms linked to the original Victorian building. There are specialist teaching rooms for Computing, Music, Languages and Art/Design & Technology, whilst The Southwell Hall offers a large space for assemblies, drama and a wide range of extra-curricular activities. In addition, we share a number of facilities with St Mary’s; a dining room, Chapel, science laboratories, a 25m indoor swimming pool, sport hall and a range of sports courts and playing fields

Our wraparound care provision offers a Breakfast Club from 7.30am-8.15am and at the end of the day our After-school Club is open from 4.00pm-6.00pm. The children enjoy the benefit of fresh air and exercise in an extensive, secure environment which includes fields, playgrounds, swings and other play equipment.

Education at St Margaret’s is not just about academic rigour, it’s also about respect and understanding for each other and giving our pupils the tools to understand themselves. Throughout their time at school we see our children grow in independence, self-esteem and confidence as they learn key ‘soft skills’. We all work towards ensuring that firm foundations are laid before the children move on to senior school and face the challenges that the workplace and wider world will present in the future.
