Job overview

Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18. The school is looking to appoint a part-time teacher of music (brass ensemble) and is seeking well-qualified and enthusiastic applicants to teach in this thriving department.  The successful applicant may also be offered the additional role of instrumental teacher of brass, on a self employed basis, if this suits. This has a flexible load, depending on demand, and currently amounts to approximately one full day teaching.

Applicants will have appropriate instrumental experience, have knowledge of technique for all brass instruments, appropriate understanding of the theory of music and a suitable teaching qualification and experience.

Our music department has an outstanding reputation and offers specialist classrooms, 18 practice rooms, and a concert hall. There is a rich annual programme of contemporary and classical concerts, at school and throughout the region, enabling pupils of all ages to experience the thrill of live performance of both established works and their own compositions. We enjoy regular performances at Exeter Cathedral and a number of local churches in our full programme of annual musical events., amounting to over 20 concerts per year.

The three academic staff and twelve of the instrumental teachers coach and rehearse orchestras, seven chamber ensembles, eight choirs, two brass ensembles, five jazz bands, and a samba drum troupe. The array of opportunity means that 25% of pupils are involved in at least one of our 35 bands and ensembles, and over 20 different musical instruments are played across the department. The Exeter School Music Partnership scheme (ESMUP) takes our pupils out into the community, teaching music to pupils in local primary schools. 27 professional instrumental teachers teach almost 500 35-minute instrumental lessons a week in 17 practice rooms. Pupils are given 60 lesson time slots a week to choose from.

The role will attract a competitive salary as well as generous benefits including employer pension contribution, free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking, discretionary staff discount on school fees and use of indoor swimming pool and fitness suite.

The closing date for applications is 5 November at noon. We anticipate that interviews will be held on 14 November. Applications must include a completed Exeter School application form. For safeguarding purposes, a CV alone is not sufficient. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis and may close the role before the advertised closing date if a suitable applicant is found. Therefore, we encourage you to submit your application as early as possible. To arrange a discussion about the role please contact hr@exeterschool.org.uk.
