This job description describes the practical purpose and main elements of the job. It is a guide to the nature and main duties of the job as they exist currently, but it is not intended as a wholly comprehensive schedule.

Sport plays an important role in life at Wellesley Prep School. All pupils have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a wealth of social and competitive sport. The central aim is to develop in all pupils an interest in, and enthusiasm for physical activity, nurturing their independence, self-confidence, leadership and teamwork.

Wellesley Prep School seeks an enthusiastic and able graduate to join the PE department, ideally with a specialism in netball, hockey or cricket; with a flexibility to teach PE and games across all years from Nursery to Year 8. This post would suit a newly qualified, aspiring or early career teacher, ideally with a level 2 coaching qualification in at least one sport.  

Main areas of responsibility:

  • To deliver high quality sports coaching.
  • Assist in the development of the coaching plans for the year
  • Organise appropriate practice sessions and skills development
  • Instruct correct use of equipment and other skills required for particular sports
  • Officiate games as required
  • Ensure appropriate health and safety requirements are adhered to
  • Ensure pupils’ behaviour is appropriate
  • Ensure correct and safe equipment is used
  • Ensure pupils attend when required
  • Support the PE department in the organisation and running of fixtures against other schools
  • Support the PE department in the organisation and running of inter-house sport
  • To participate in meetings with colleagues, parents, or others to discuss matters that are pertinent to the welfare or progress of the children, or that are relevant to the school generally;
  • To engage fully in the school appraisal system and to be active in the improvement and development of both themselves and the school;
  • To assume responsibility for the coordination of pastoral care of pupils in his or her class, under the guidance and direction of the SLT.

 

General Responsibilities (common to all teaching staff) include:

  •  To provide a stimulating and caring environment;
  • To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of available techniques, resources and developments in your subject area(s);
  • To review personal teaching methods and programmes to ensure that his or her teaching is effective, stimulating and in line with current good practice;
  • To assess pupils' progress in line with school and departmental policy and record assessments in a clear and useful way;
  • To ensure he or she is aware of any pupils in class who have learning difficulties and what their needs are, liaising regularly with the Learning Support Department and Form Teachers;
  • To be aware of those pupils who have been identified as either requiring ‘Learning Support’ or are ‘Gifted and Talented’ and differentiate accordingly;
  • To take part in staff meetings and departmental meetings as required;
  • To accept advice and instruction from the Head of Sport with regard to departmental policies and schemes of work, maintenance of records and care of resources, and the like.


Working at Wellesley:

  • Immediately responsible to: Director of Studies
  • Hours of work: 8am – 5pm Monday - Friday
  • Full-time
  • Commencement Date: 1st January 2025
  • School Term time only (to include working days prior to the return and after the departure of pupils as may be necessary for the proper performance of your duties).
  • Notice Period: One school term.
  • Salary: Depending on experience.
