Job overview

SLD / PMLD Teacher

Main to Upper Pay Scales with SEN2 point

Start date: after October half term or January 2025

Manchester Hospital School works to ensure that any child who is unable to attend their own school due to ill health can continue to make progress in their education and to experience success.

We work with children of all ages and abilities and operate across a number of sites including Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) and the Christie NHS Foundation Trust. We run the Leo Kelly Centre as part of our hospital school for children and young people with specific health needs which cannot be met in any other settings. We also offer home tuition to children who cannot attend either their own school or any of our locations.

We are a school like no other: a place where you can make a real difference to the lives of children and families during a period where they need it the most. It is incredibly rewarding work.

About the Role

You will deliver highly personalised teaching to SLD and PMLD learners within our hospital setting. You’ll be working with children who experience a wide range of learning disabilities, physical disabilities and/or complex medical conditions, communication difficulties and or sensory impairments (HI/VI), behaviour difficulties and ASD. Therefore, an adaptable and flexible approach will be an important attribute. With support from another specialist teacher as well as a committed and involved senior leadership team you will be asked to lead on assessing pupils’ needs and developing and evaluating bespoke learning programmes. You can also expect to work closely with our Assistant SENCO on all aspects of EHP plans. This may involve leading on all aspects of plans, undertaking a review process for students, supporting requests for statutory assessments, leading review meetings and providing updated educational advice.

About you

We are looking for someone with considerable experience of working with children with additional needs. Already a skilled SLD and/or PMLD practitioner, you will be confident in your ability to work autonomously, managing your own workload while recognising where you need to draw on the expertise and advice of others.

It’s important that you bring a flexible and practically-minded approach to your work. It’s likely that you will work across more than one of our sites in any given week and you can expect to teach in a range of settings e.g. teaching in pupils’ homes, working with groups or on a one-to-one basis. This role is anticipated to be a full-time appointment, but we will consider part-time arrangements for the right candidate.

All our SLD/PMLD teaching roles are offered at Main to Upper Pay Scales with SEN2 points.
