The role encompasses key responsibilities in Pastoral Leadership, Management and Safeguarding. The successful candidate will play a vital role in driving the development of the school; ensuring a consistently positive experience for all our pupils.

The role reports directly to the Head of Prep School.

Responsibilities

 Pastoral Leadership/Management and Safeguarding

  • Acting as the Designated Safeguarding Lead in Prep School.
  • Taking responsibility for embedding a culture of safeguarding across the school and promoting a culture of “it could happen here”.
  • Developing and managing target-setting strategies, in conjunction with the Deputy Head Academic, to enhance the pupil experience, and line managing the form tutors accordingly.
  • Coordinating an effective implementation of the PSHE and RSE programmes in conjunction with the Head of Department/Curriculum Coordinator.
  • Leading on all areas relating to the rewards and sanctions management across all year groups.
  • Ensuring meticulous record-keeping of all behavioural, disciplinary and safeguarding matters in line with Brighton College, BSO and other required international and in-territory inspection requirements.
  • Maintaining and managing an accurate log of all complaints, including stage 1 informal concerns.
  • Managing the cross-phase liaison with the Prep School and Pre-Prep Leadership Team in order to ensure smooth transition arrangements for all areas of pastoral care.
  • Leading on the establishment of pupil committees, such as the Pupil Council and other systems, to ensure pupil voice feeds into school improvement.
  • Oversight for the House system, including managing House Leads and Deputy House Leads, the annual activity overview and its implementation.
  • Retaining oversight for all work relating to charity and social responsibility.
  • Producing an annual update of all school policies and documentation in relation to pastoral care and safeguarding at the College.
  • Organising and running pastoral information events for pupils and parents.
  • Developing and maintaining oversight for all forms of pupil responsibility within the College.
  • Have oversight of pupil attendance, including absence requests, registration and dismissal.

Broader Senior Leadership Team/Operational

  • Contributing to the whole-school culture of pastoral care and safeguarding.
  • Supporting the Head of Prep with the delivery of inspirational, thought-provoking and celebratory weekly assemblies.
  • Liaising with parents and outside agencies, as appropriate, to develop positive relationships outside the College community.
  • Contributing to the SLT’s role in monitoring and evaluating teaching and learning throughout the school.
  • Maintaining and enhancing the quality of the College’s operational effectiveness and contributing to the effective performance of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
  • Ensuring the Brighton College values are fully embedded into the College community.
  • Contributing to the collection and dissemination of all information relating to the College for the purposes of marketing and communication.
  • Contributing to the strategic planning of the whole College in order to implement the College vision.
  • Deputising for the Head of Prep in their absence.
  • Any other reasonable management request. 

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge

  • An Honours degree or equivalent.
  • A record of continual professional development.
  • An ability to demonstrate an excellent record as a teacher and middle/senior leader, with evidence of providing support and guidance to staff in all matters associated with specific responsibilities.
  • First-class communication skills with a demonstrable ability to act as an effective and compelling ambassador for the College.
  • A demonstrable appetite for educational innovation and a broad knowledge of the rapidly changing sector internationally.
  • Knowledge of strategies to raise standards of attainment for a different groups of learners.
  • Excellent organisational, IT and administrative skills.
  • Proven ability to monitor and evaluate teams and individuals.
  • Ability to think strategically and to contribute to the development of the College.
