Job overview

We are looking for an Apprentice to join our property maintenance team - based in Lincolnshire, with travel to academies based in Lincolnshire & Yorkshire. (Van base is Barnes Wallis Academy).  This role could be the ideal first step in your career – providing on-the-job experience and structured training in eg plumbing, painting and decorating, carpentry and health and safety.

About the role

Working and training as part of a multi skilled team to support the activities of the Facilities Department in the assessment, maintenance, decoration and repair of the Education Trust’s schools – enabling them to run safely and smoothly every day.

Offering experience at Property Maintenance Level 2 including learning and development skills in : planning a sequence of work, health and safety, risk assessments, building regulations, safe working practices, use of tools and equipment, electrical skills, emergency system checks, drainage systems, environmental and energy management, carpentry and joinery skills, painting and decorating, tiling, general repairs, using technical literature, recording and reporting information (using IT and written reports), communication skills, customer service skills.

Assisting the team by responding to delegated requests from our schools, assisting with general maintenance tasks (under direction) related to all properties, conducting minor installations and repairs to the structure fabric, fixtures and fittings.

There will be travel to academies within the region and your role will include routine building maintenance, refurbishment, painting and decorating, small projects and minor repairs. The team also provides caretaking cover to any academy that may need assistance.

Who we are looking for

  • Motivated to become a skilled maintenance professional
  • Enjoy working with people and maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Hard working and seeking to learn from an experienced team of professionals
  • Flexibility - as the role has lots of variety and no two days are the same
  • Ability to perform the physical tasks required for the post including lifting, carrying and pushing various equipment
  • Hold GSCE Grade E/2 or above in English & Maths or Functional Skills Level 1 in English & Maths and preferably have some practical knowledge and personal experience of building and DIY.

The Barnes Wallis Academy is a mixed, mainstream, state secondary school located in Tattershall, Lincolnshire.  It caters to students aged 11 to 16 and has a growing roll with approximately 470 students currently. 

The Barnes Wallis Academy was founded in 1954 and was previously named Gartree Community School.  It began as a foundation school administered by Lincolnshire County Council and converted to academy status on 1st September 2014.  The school is now sponsored by the David Ross Education Trust but continues to coordinate with Lincolnshire County Councils for admissions.  In 2017 the Academy gained a “good” rating from Ofsted with personal development, behaviour and welfare being graded outstanding.
