We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly efficient individual from November 2024 to support the delivery of chemistry lessons in a well-resourced environment, with due regard to the health and safety of all students and other individuals who have contact with the area. The post holder will be in charge of the chemistry preparation room, chemical store and all aspects of assisting the chemistry department from Year 7 to Upper Sixth.

The successful applicant will have strong organisational skills with the ability to effectively plan ahead and work on their own initiative as well as following instructions. They will be a strong communicator, able to communicate confidently with a wide range of people of all ages. A knowledge of laboratory health and safety, and familiarity with science equipment and chemical solutions is required.

This is a term-time only post, working Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm (with a 30-minute lunch break). The post-holder will report to the Head of Chemistry.

All staff share the responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the students, in accordance with the School’s safeguarding policies.

The Department

The School has outstanding science facilities in the form of a new Science Centre which provides twelve state-of-the-art laboratories and three good-sized preparation rooms with associated stores. There is a thirteenth laboratory (S3) across a link corridor with its own preparation room, which is used primarily for the junior department and KS3 science. Within the Chemistry department there are currently 5 members of teaching staff and across science there are 14 teachers and 2 other full-time, term time Science Technicians (for biology and physics).

All students study the three sciences at KS4, and in the Sixth Form separate science courses are offered at A level. A level Chemistry is a popular option, with approximately 36 students across three teaching groups in both L6 and U6

Founded on Christian values, we enable every girl to discover and develop her own strengths. St Helen & St Katharine is a school where success is celebrated but not revered and our goal is to ensure that every girl achieves success as she defines it, so that she can believe in herself, her talents and her abilities.

We are one of the leading girls’ schools in the country and are justifiably proud of a tradition of high aspiration and academic achievement (our students achieved record breaking GCSE results with 77% A* this year). But we take just as much pleasure in the warmth of the atmosphere here and in our dynamic range of extra-curricular activities. From Minecraft to Mandarin, Silversmithing to Sailing, Board Games to Big Band and much more besides, our girls are given the space and opportunity to make their own choices and find their niche.

A welcoming 22 acre campus in Abingdon provides exceptional facilities that include a brand new state-of-the-art Sports Centre; Performing Arts Centre; extended Sixth Form Centre; Science Centre with 12 new laboratories, break out spaces and a 200sqm science themed glass atrium and a 3D Design Centre.

This is a friendly and happy place in which lasting relationships are built on kindness and respect. Our ambitions for our students are based upon them developing confidence and resilience and an open-minded and creative approach to learning and to life.
