About The Bermuda High School

The Bermuda High School (BHS) is an independent school for students from the Early Years Programme (EYP) through Year 13. BHS is all-girls from EYP until Year 11, welcoming boys in Years 12 & 13 for the Senior Years Programme (SYP). The School offers the English National Curriculum through Key Stage 1-3, the IGCSE examinations at Key Stage 4, and the IB Diploma Programme, IB Courses and A Levels in the final two years of school. Students may also sit the SAT I and II examinations in Years 12 & 13.
The school is affiliated with Cambridge and Edexcel examination boards for IGCSE and A Level examinations. Most students sit 9 IGCSE examinations, of which over 40% of results are at A*/A level. BHS has been authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma since 2000 and introduced A Levels to the curriculum in September 2023. Year 12 and Year 13 students are housed in their own SYP Centre, situated to the north of the campus. Our IB DP pass rate of over 80% remains above the world average year after year.
The educational programme at BHS aims to foster well-rounded students with a strong focus on leadership, the arts, athletics and community service.
The Primary Department comprises EYP - Year 6, catering to students aged 4 - 10. In the Primary Department, where the demands of external examinations don’t yet exist, students are offered a sound academic education in an environment that seeks to promote the development of self-esteem through a sense of accomplishment. Our goals are to increase each student's knowledge, skills, experience and understanding, to encourage independent and creative thinking and to develop awareness of moral values.
Alongside the English National Curriculum, we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which is designed to meet the needs of average to above-average students. The normal developmental differences that occur in primary-age students are addressed through differentiated activities based on the IPC curriculum. Specialist help for mild learning difficulties is available through the Reading Intervention Programme, but we do not have a programme for those with severe learning disabilities. Learning with the IPC means that children focus on a combination of academic, personal and international learning that is exciting and challenging. The aim of the IPC is to help every student enjoy learning a wide range of subjects and develop an inquiring mind. Thematic units are introduced each term, giving the girls a sense of their own nationality and culture and discovering a profound respect for the nationalities and cultures of others.
This dedicated learning environment continues as students move into the Secondary Department, adjusting to meet the new demands imposed by external examination requirements. Our Secondary Department (Years 7-13) fosters a dynamic, personalised and inclusive learning environment within a climate of mutual respect. Learning experiences are infused with a focus on intellectual curiosity, empowerment, innovation and continuous improvement. Students are seen to be self-motivated, resilient and engaged learners who pursue their interests and develop the mindset and skills to succeed. The core curriculum in the Secondary Department is designed to meet the needs of average to above-average students. Limited specialist help for mild learning disabilities is available.
Throughout their time at BHS, our students develop their collaboration skills, begin to gain an understanding of Leadership through the “I Lead” and “She LEADS” leadership frameworks, and dive into the world of Innovation and STEAM.
Since 2005, BHS has been a Round Square School. This provides an excellent opportunity for students and staff to be involved in global service projects, international conferences and exchanges. Round Square is based on the educational philosophy of Kurt Hahn, which embraces the six IDEALS: internationalism, democracy, environment, adventure, leadership, and service. Hahn believed that the foremost task of education is to ensure the survival of the qualities of an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial and compassion. BHS is the only school in Bermuda to be accredited as a Round Square school, alongside 400+ schools worldwide.
Since June 2015, The Bermuda High School has achieved accreditation through the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Accreditation by both CIS and NEASC indicates that as a member school, BHS has achieved high standards of professional performance and is committed to continuing improvement.
BHS is located in the capital city of Hamilton, Bermuda. A British Overseas Territory, Bermuda is an archipelago of islands, roughly 21 square miles long, with hot, humid summers and mild winters; temperatures rarely reach below 55F. Bermuda is between 2-3 hours by plane to many gateway cities in the United States, and is roughly 7 hours from London.
