Job overview
The Scottish Government is undertaking a significant programme of education reform. Replacing SQA with Qualifications Scotland is a key priority within this programme. Qualifications Scotland will be established with a new governance structure that places involvement from and accountability towards children, young people, adult learners, and the teaching professions at the heart of what it does.
As part of this, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills commissioned the Chair of SQA to undertake some work which considers a dedicated structure within Qualifications Scotland which will serve and support the schools’ sector and aim to restore teachers’ trust in the qualifications body.
We are looking for a Secondary Head Teacher to join us as a Senior Adviser on an 18-month secondment to support and advise on the work to develop and deliver these structures, and the culture, in which schools are supported by Qualifications Scotland.
This is an excellent opportunity to be central to delivering the Scottish Government’s decisions and vision on qualifications and assessment, alongside connected priorities arising from the education reform programme.
The role:
- Working closely with the Executive team and the Board where appropriate
- Working with the SQA Education Reform team and Leadership teams to design and deliver a schools’ unit which meet the requirements set out by the Cabinet Secretary and ensuring it delivers for teachers.
- Supporting the design and implementation of meaningful engagement with the teaching profession on all aspects of qualifications reform.
- Working as part of the team responsible for the implementation of qualifications reform.
- Operating as a senior leader and supporting qualifications engagement and other change initiatives while building trust in Qualifications Scotland as a new body.
What you'll need to succeed:
- Recent Headteacher experience within a secondary school
- Experience of a diverse range of qualifications as part of a curriculum offer.
- Ability to work under pressure while working with ambiguity.
- High level stakeholder management skills gained through working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
- An effective, credible, and authoritative communicator
- Sound understanding of the roles of each part of the education system and their interdependencies.
- Understanding of assessments and their role within qualifications
- Creative thinker and problem-solver within the context of the Scottish education and qualifications system
The role can be based in either SQA offices in Glasgow city centre or Dalkeith with travel to the other, whilst also offering hybrid working.
