Job overview

Stamford School has an exciting opportunity for a Teacher of Chemistry to join the Chemistry Department and Science Faculty.

Stamford values the role of Chemistry in the curriculum, recognising it as one of the three science core subjects studied by students from Y7 to Y11.

Chemistry at Stamford is currently taught by an experienced team of five full time and two part time specialist teachers, some of whom hold additional responsibilities and/or contribute to the teaching of a second science at Y7 to Y11.

Our Chemistry teachers are passionate about the subject: all contribute to the department’s enrichment activities, which include the Chemistry Olympiad, C3L6 competition, RSC Schools’ Analyst competition and Top of the Bench competition. There is an annual department trip to York University for Y12 Chemists and the department helps with other science department trips.

The department also has an excellent track record of achievement in public examinations. Students are encouraged to be intellectually curious and to develop an effective independent work ethos. As you would expect for a subject heavily dependent on the application of subject-specific knowledge, we emphasise the need for continuous learning of the subject material, but we also recognise that without the development of complementary skills in e.g. complex multi-step problem solving, connection-finding, abstraction and self-regulation, students can struggle to apply their learning effectively. We therefore strive to assist students in developing these skills alongside acquiring the required subject content.

We can offer this role on a full-time or part-time basis depending upon the suitable candidate. Stamford has its own salary scale, and remuneration will depend on experience.

Essential Criteria

  • A good honours degree in a related subject and postgraduate certificate in education (QTS).
  • Experience of teaching or working with GCSE and Sixth Form aged students.
  • Inspire respect and credibility through the discharge of their duties and use their expertise to influence others in relation to their subject.
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of current issues relating to the personal development of young people.
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of how to promote equalities and ensure inclusive teaching and learning practices.
  • Ability to inspire, challenge, motivate and empower students as they prepare for life beyond school.
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and parents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with staff, students, parents and the wider community.
  • A reflective practitioner who seeks advice and support when necessary.
