Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic Teacher of English to join one of the world's leading British-style overseas schools. This would be a great move into a high-achieving, friendly and happy school community, in a fabulous country with lots going on and an excellent lifestyle on offer. You will enjoy Peponi far more than most of the other schools you could go to!
Kenyan education is generally regarded as excellent. A vibrant independent sector includes about a dozen British-style schools, not as "international schools" that just happen to be there but as an established and inherent part of the educational fabric. The British-style schools are at the forefront of Kenyan education, and Peponi is at the forefront of those schools. As an HMC member school, it enjoys an outstanding reputation and educates around 350 children aged 13 to 18 from a cosmopolitan mix of local and expatriate families.
Our English Department is thriving and has consistently recorded high performance. As well as achieving great success at IGCSE and A level, the department runs a rich and varied co-curricular programme which ensures that English language skills and an appreciation of English literature are embedded throughout the school.
We are now seeking an exceptional Teacher of English who is truly enthusiastic about their teaching. An excellent and proven track record of teaching both English Language and English Literature courses up to IGCSE is desirable; A Level experience is also advantageous, but not necessary.
You must be forward thinking, imaginative and keen to regard this as an exciting opportunity for further career development. What we really want is someone who can genuinely excite and inspire our pupils, someone who is passionate about English language and literature, and someone who will go the extra mile to ignite those passions in the students and help them go further than they ever dreamed they could. You must be able to support each individual’s growth and development, encouraging them to achieve and be the best they can be.
You do not need to have had experience in the independent sector, but you do need a strongly can-do mindset.
As a boarding and day school, we will also expect you to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole. This will be enjoyable because of the happy, collegiate atmosphere, and we have a wide range of pastoral programmes and extra-curricular activities.
Our staff enjoy excellent working conditions including accommodation, a generous and comprehensive reward package, and significant amounts of personal and professional development. There is a great team spirit in our Common Room. If you join us you will achieve great job satisfaction and excellent experience, and you will enjoy a first-class quality of life in a wonderful location. Kenya has so much to offer, with a great year-round climate and amazing countryside, amazing wildlife, and amazing beaches just a few hours away at Mombasa.
This vacancy has arisen at short notice and we're ideally looking for someone who can start in January. However, if you would only be available later, please get in touch anyway.
To keep things simple, please express your initial interest by emailing our Headmaster, Mark Durston, at applicants@peponischool.org. All we need at this stage is a cv and/or details of your career to date, with a short note about what you could bring to the school and how you might fit in. For the moment, we do not need an application form, a full personal statement, details of your referees, or copies of your qualifications and certificates.
Please make contact as soon as possible as we will begin arranging initial conversations straight away.
