Job overview

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhance literacy, The Stonehenge School is focusing on oracy—promoting spoken language as a vital part of learning. We aim to deepen students' understanding across subjects by encouraging effective communication and meaningful discussions in the classroom.

To support this initiative, we are seeking Oracy Champions to lead the way in raising the profile of spoken language throughout the school. Working closely with our Literacy Coordinator and in partnership with Voice 21, Oracy Champions will introduce a range of oracy-focused initiatives across all subjects.

This is a unique opportunity for passionate educators to make a tangible impact on students’ learning experiences through the power of spoken language, as well as promoting other areas of our literacy work across the school.

The successful candidate will also be a qualified teacher of English joining an experienced department, for the delivery of English at KS3 and GCSE. As part of the English department and a member of The Stonehenge School, you will be part of a supportive and reflective team of dedicated professionals who continually improve and develop their practice in order to achieve the best for the young people at our school.

We are looking for colleagues with:

  • a commitment to raising achievement
  • the ability to engage and support students
  • an enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the subject area
  • A commitment to help all young people and staff to achieve their best is expected of all staff.

The Stonehenge School is a mixed, comprehensive, non-denominational secondary school situated in Amesbury, Wiltshire. It is an above average-sized state school, having almost reached its full capacity of 1,120 places for pupils aged 11–16. In 2019, our new £6.5 million extension was opened providing 24 additional state-of-the -art classrooms, and in 2023 further improvements have been made through the £6 million block that was opened to replace existing accommodation.

The school serves the expanding town of Amesbury, the location of the Boscombe Down airbase and the Solstice Park Enterprise Zone, the two largest employers in the area.  The catchment area also includes several of the surrounding villages and around a quarter of the intake lives outside of our catchment.  Many of these are children from services families located on Salisbury Plain.
