Languages are highly valued at Cleeve and there is a keen interest by the Executive Head and Governing body to continue to increase student uptake of the EBacc and develop international links and events across the curriculum. Outcomes in MFL have significantly improved over the years and the department goes from strength to strength! The department has an extremely well-resourced subject area, with attractive teaching rooms, an excellent range of teaching resources and a great network with local schools.
At Cleeve School students of Mandarin are part of the nationally-recognised Mandarin Excellence Programme. We invest significantly into the study of Mandarin allowing students and teachers access to a wide variety of resources, such as electronic resources like GoChinese and cultural enrichment activities and days. Students are timetabled for up to 8 hours of Mandarin a fortnight, promoting excellent progress in the language, and numbers in Year 7 MEP classes rose 50% between September 2022 and September 2023, making it a truly exciting time to join the languages department at Cleeve School.

“The overall achievement of students is good, and outstanding for some. It is outstanding for those students who need extra help and in some subjects, including mathematics. Students’ achievement in English and in the sixth form is good and improving.”
“Much teaching in all subjects and in the sixth form is at least good, with a significant proportion that is outstanding.”
