Job overview

MATERNITY COVER: TEACHER OF Modern Foreign Languages

Required from January 2025 (or sooner)

MPS/UPS

The Role and the Modern Foreign Languages Department:

This is a rare chance for a candidate to apply for the position in the Modern Foreign Languages at Balshaw’s. The MFL department at Balshaw’s is outstanding and has seen two of its members move to senior leadership team positions at other schools in the past couple of years and the Head of MFL has been promoted from within our outstanding teaching staff.

This post is a full-time fixed term contract for a 9-month maternity cover (or until the post holder returns).

This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher or NQT looking to work in an outstanding department where students enjoy the way that MFL is taught and where colleagues have an excellent co-operative approach to collaborative working.

Students at Balshaw’s study one of two languages: French or Spanish. The year is split into two halves with four classes in each, half of which study Spanish and half of which study French. Approximately half of all students take a GCSE in Modern Foreign Languages. The successful candidate will need to be able to teach both French and Spanish at KS3 and French to KS4 as a consequence of the spread of expertise in the department.

The department has a clear curriculum vision and the team work together very closely to implement the curriculum with lively, interactive lessons which drive progress and engagement largely in target language as far as is appropriate. The department has outstanding teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about teaching their subject.

The department are also passionate about developing the extra-curricular aspects of language development to encourage immersion. Some of the regular activities that take place are Culture Club and Film Club. There are also significant annual events such as Languages Week which the whole school gets involved in. Of course, there are the foreign trips that take place every year too. MFL have their own trips to France and Spain and have also been involved with trips like the Battlefields trip to Belgium.

This is a great opportunity to grow and foster the love of languages that exists at Balshaw’s.

The closing date is Sunday 13th October.

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.

Values and Vision

Richard Balshaw wanted the school to be a supportive and inclusive place that benefited the whole child, and his view remains important today. The school has high expectations of pupils and aims for excellence, at the same time as upholding its Christian faith and creating healthy working relationships with parents and local churches, businesses, industries and the community. Balshaw's motto “Non sibi sed aliis”, which translates as “not for ourselves but for others”, reflects the selfless and tolerant nature of the school .

Ofsted

"Leaders are ambitious for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Pupils know that their teachers have high standards for their academic achievement and their behaviour. The majority of pupils work hard to rise to these expectations. They behave responsibly and they achieve well. The atmosphere around school is calm and respectful.  Pupils feel safe.  Leaders and governors share a clear vison for the quality of education."
