Job overview

Washwood Heath Academy are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, dedicated and exceptional Science practitioner. If you have a passion for Science and want to inspire this in pupils and staff, our innovative, hard-working, friendly and supportive team would like you to join us.

Washwood Heath Academy is a relatively new All Through Academy (Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form) in the East of Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established Science team and contribute to a Department that seeks to provide a first class education for all of its learners.  In order for all pupils to achieve academic excellence, we deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum where teachers are the experts and their role it is to convey their knowledge and expertise to pupils. We believe that all pupils are entitled to learn about ‘The best, which has been thought and said’ (Matthew Arnold).

Our school is in a central location, with wonderful and enthusiastic pupils and amazing staff who always go the extra mile for their classes. Our friendly, family feel is part of the reason that parents choose Washwood Heath Academy for their children.  We are part of the Washwood Heath Multi Academy Trust which is a family of local schools located within 15 minutes of one another: 4 Primary schools, 2 Secondary schools and 1 All-through school. This will give you the opportunity to grow and develop professionally with a fantastic Academy Trust that is very supportive and collaborative with a strong sense of community.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Teacher of Science, preferably at Key Stages 3 and 4. There will be an opportunity to deliver Science lessons to our Primary pupils too.  You will have an up to date understanding of research-based teaching and learning strategies and a willingness to support curriculum development. As a positive role model to the whole school community, you’ll have a natural flair for developing practices that empower and motivate staff and students to become the best they can be.

In return, we will offer you:

  •    A collaborative and inclusive culture, where team members will upskill you and give you regular opportunities to learn from each other in a safe and collaborative environment, both within your schools and Trust-wide.
  •     An opportunity to undertake structured CPD via access to the National College online CPD platform and/or apprenticeships such as Level 7 Senior Leaders Masters, with regular twilights.
  •      Access to Career Pathways and Pledge to help you plan for and make your goals a reality via our Professional Growth and Performance (PPG) process.
  •     A wellbeing culture, with paid and unpaid time off to support life events via our Life Leave Policy, access to a Wellbeing Champion and the opportunity to participate in our annual staff wellbeing survey with Edurio, so we know and can respond to views.
  •     Access to 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which includes confidential counselling, access to wellbeing advice and a lifestyle app called “My Possible Self”.
  •      Access to a suite of supportive policies, such as Life Leave, Wellbeing, Career Break and Family Friendly.
  •      Access to a generous pension scheme known as the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (LGPS).
  •     Access to a comprehensive employee rewards package including Long Service Awards, Employee Referral Scheme, Cycle to Work Scheme and contribution to glasses and eye-sight tests for eligible display screen users.
  •     Opportunity to be part of key Trust-wide collaborative groups such as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI working group) and Wellbeing working groups, including menopause support and neurodiversity support.
  •      Onsite parking at all schools.

If you would like to join our forward-thinking academy with a strong vision, and a team of staff and students who share the commitment to its success then, we would welcome your application.

We welcome applications from experienced teachers and NQT’s. Please download the job pack for a full job description and person specification.

If you can demonstrate that you possess the necessary experience, knowledge and qualifications and aspire to our vision and values then we would like to hear from you.

Informal conversations are warmly welcomed. Please contact Matt O’Reilly, Assistant Headteacher, at: moreilly@washwood.academy

NB CVs will not be accepted

Headteacher's Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to Washwood Heath Academy - a thriving All-through school in the heart of the local community. Washwood Heath Academy offers a rich, stimulating and rewarding learning environment for pupils aged 4 - 18.

Washwood Heath Academy is an oversubscribed All-through school, educating children from EYFS to Sixth Form. Our new purpose built primary school facility was opened in March 2019 and provides a fantastic teaching and learning environment for our younger pupils.  Visitors to the school are always impressed by the high standards in lessons and around the Academy and how welcoming and polite our young people are.

We expect pupils to achieve the very best they can within a friendly and welcoming setting, underpinned by our HEARTS ethos and family atmosphere.

Washwood Heath inspires its pupils to strive for and reach their full potential, no matter what their abilities or talents.

I believe that every one of our pupils has potential to go on and become outstanding members of society and our caring and supportive school environment is the perfect place for them to grow in confidence.  We strive to provide the best for every child by understanding, respecting and providing for each and every young person in our care. Our excellent relationships with parents and carers promote a shared understanding and belief in the school’s values and aims, working in partnership for their child’s education.

Washwood Heath offers an ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum for EYFS and Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, which aims to enrich and challenge all learners, enabling academic, moral, spiritual, social and cultural needs to be met. At key stage 4 (Years 9 to 11), the school offers an academic GCSE English Baccalaureate core for an increasing number of pupils and a broad choice of option subjects. We encourage our learners to continue their education beyond Year 11 and we offer a high quality and personalised curriculum in our Sixth Form.

Pupils will often hear me and other staff talk about what makes us who we are at Washwood Heath. We believe that all pupils should be kind, tolerant, and respectful and aim for excellence in all that they do. This, for me, characterises The Washwood Way.

The education we provide will be in line with these values and will develop your child’s knowledge, understanding and skills such that they can become highly qualified, responsible citizens able to participate fully in all parts of community life.

We have excellent teachers who stop at nothing to ensure their pupils achieve the success that they deserve, through hard work, self-belief and fun.  Our extra-curricular opportunities provide something for everyone including a wide range of in-school workshops, theatre productions and sporting opportunities. Through our Washwood Heath Passport, our young people are offered a wide range of trips and visits including castles, parks, farms, cities and places of cultural and historical interest. In addition, we are increasing the number of weekend and weekday residentials for our pupils.

Every child’s education is of utmost importance to us. Everything that we do is geared towards providing the very best for the pupils that we serve. We will give you lots of information to help you appreciate more about our pupil’s progress and their courses of study. A partnership between us based on excellent communication and collaboration is the foundation of a child’s future success.

In short, Washwood Heath Academy is a place where all children, from all backgrounds and abilities can be safe, happy and inspired to achieve.

I hope you enjoy having a look around the website to find out more about the school.  If you would prefer to come and see our superb learning environment in person, please contact us and we can arrange for you to have a tour.

Mrs Lynn Petrie
