Job overview

The Science Department at St Bede's College currently consists of twelve teachers, three of whom are part time. We are a friendly and collaborative team, with a passion to excite pupils about Science through practical work and forward thinking teaching practices. The department boasts nine dedicated laboratories, each equipped with modern interactive touch panel boards. The department is proud to run several co-curricular clubs from experiment-based workshops in collaboration with our sixth form scientist, to career forums to support Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry applicants. We regularly enter students in national Olympiads, with several pupils each year achieving Gold and Silver awards.

Combined Science is taught in mixed ability groups in Upper Third (Y7) and Lower Fourth (Y8), by one Teacher.

In Upper Fourth (Y9), pupils begin AQA Science Trilogy after a term-long introductory unit. They are taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics by three specialist teachers. The most able pupils are selected to study AQA Separate Science in the same three year period. A minority of pupils are entered for Foundation Tier AQA Science Trilogy.

There are also two dedicated members of part-time staff who work in the Achievement Centre, providing pupils who are struggling with specialised support in a one-to-one or very small group setting.

The Sciences are a very popular choice at A Level, and we are proud of our small class sizes in order to facilitate one-to-one practical work and excellent working relationship between pupil and teacher. Biology, Chemistry and Physics all follow the AQA A Level courses.
