Thank you for taking an interest in the Visiting Music Teacher Brass role at Aberdour School. As a Visiting Music Teacher, you will work alongside our music department to ensure the highest standards of high-quality brass instruction to students of all ages. The role is self-employed and will report to the Director of Music.

Lesson charges: currently £25 per 30-minute lesson.

The current rate of room hire is £5 per pupil per term.

Contract – self-employed.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities of the role:

  • Plan and deliver engaging and effective brass lessons tailored to individual student needs and learning styles.
  • Teach fundamental techniques, music theory, sight-reading and repertoire appropriate to students’ skill levels.
  • Inspire and motivate students to develop their musical abilities and foster a love for music.
  • Prepare students for performances, examinations and competitions as required.
  • Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback to support their development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in school events and performances.
  • Examinations – preparing students for ABRSM or Trinity graded examinations where necessary.
  • Timetabling – to create your own timetable in advance half termly, cross checking with the school calendar to ensure timetables take account of school events and examinations. To communicate this timetable in advance with the school and parents.
  • Liaising with parents and the Director of Music regarding pupil progress as necessary.
  • Be prepared to promote services in school assemblies / lessons to recruit students.
  • Willingness to teach whole-class brass lessons will be an advantage.

All visiting Music Teachers have a responsibility and duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils. Visiting Music Teachers must be aware of the systems within the School which support safeguarding and must act in accordance with the School’s Safeguarding and Child Protect Policy and Code of Conduct Policy. Visiting Music Teachers will receive appropriate child protection training which is regularly updated.

Qualifications, training and experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, Music etc.
  • Proven experience of teaching brass instruments to students of primary age and up to grade 8 level.
  • Experience in teaching a range of ages and abilities.
  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of ABRSM and Trinity examination requirements.

  • Strong knowledge of music theory.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Organisational skills to effectively plan lessons and manage student timetables.
  • Commitment to professional development and staying current with best practices in music education.
  • Be able to work flexible hours.
  • Focused on providing a consistently high standard of woodwind instruction to students.
  • Commitment to promoting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
