Volunteer Counsellor

 About this role:

Chigwell School is committed to supporting our pupil’s mental health and are looking for a volunteer counsellor to deliver therapeutic one-to-one interventions led by a clinical supervisor in school. The volunteer counsellor will offer three sessions on their working day and engage in supervision at the end.

Your focus will be delivering appropriate one-to-one interventions. You will have the ability to tailor sessions for young people considering creativity as a flexible way of working. You will be supported and supervised by our School Counsellor to discuss your caseload.

Key Responsibilities:

Service Delivery and Practice

• Identify and report safeguarding concerns. Understand safeguarding procedures and to report any concerns immediately after session to clinical supervisor.
• Abide by BACP ethical framework. Understanding and commitment to work in line with the BACP competency framework.To undertake supervision at the end of each working day.
• Undertake one-to-one clinical work with young people utilising creativity .

Relationships

• Establish positive and effective relationships with the young person and offering core values of therapeutic work with children and young people.
• Ability to build therapeutic relationships with young people.

Data

•  Accountable for note keeping and confidentiality (keeping case notes safe and secure). Part of the initial session will include contracting with the young person outlining limitations of confidentiality.

What you will need:

• To be in the second or third year of training Level 4 qualification diploma or above in counselling or psychotherapy.
• Registration with BACP or another appropriate agency.
• Understanding of child protection/safeguarding issues and the assessment of risk or willingness to complete training in this subject.
•  An understanding of the complexities and challenges children, young people and families face, and a commitment to work with compassion, perseverance, integrity, and creativity.
• Understanding of delivering therapy in a way that is underpinned with compassion, perseverance, and creativity.
• Ability to capture and report on information which will enhance your Clinical Supervision sessions.
• Experience of working with young people.
• Ability to work flexibility and adapt to the changing needs of individual schools.
• Ability to evidence self-awareness and engage with services as needed (i.e. personal therapy) to ensure your mental health and wellbeing is supported.
• A willingness to undergo an enhanced with barred list DBS check if appointed.
• A willingness to work term-time only.
