Christmas Escape Room

(0)

This fun, interactive activity is a great way to engage with the Christmas story and is completely free and entirely online, so you can host it at school, at church, or even at home.

http://www.insightinkingston.com/escape

If you are in school, there are printable, colour activity sheets to download both on this page and on every individual page of the web site. You may wish to have some of these ready for your teams. This activity will work really well in groups of 5 or 6. Each group will need access to a computer or tablet with sound and the Insight web site to complete the 7 tasks. There will be embedded YouTube videos, sound files and graphics to watch and puzzles to solve along the way.

At the end of each round is a password or code to discover. This password will unlock the next round and take you to the next part of the story. Complete all 7 of the short activities to finish. If you run out of time, you can simply return to the same web page at a later stage to finish off. Write down the name of the web page address if you’d like to go straight there for next time.

To add an element of competition, why not try to solve all 7 of the puzzles in the fastest time? We’re not timing you but if you’d like to know how well you’ve done, you can use a watch, clock or timer app. If you have a number of teams playing, let us know who the winners are and how fast you’ve done it on Twitter @insightkingston.

This activity has been designed mainly for Key Stage 3 or 4, that is 11-16s. Like most escape rooms, it can be quite cryptic and there are lots of hidden clues to look out for. But we think, with enough minds on the job it could also be played in Y6 or even as a bit of fun for grown ups. Teachers may wish to try and complete it themselves first before hosting it for others. If you get really stuck, you can email us at office@insightinkingston.com and we can either send you some clues or the answers.

Go to http://www.insightinkingston.com/escape to start.

Enjoy!

Science & Christianity: Creation

(0)

Darryl from Insight, the Kingston Churches Schools Work explains the different ideas about the age of the Earth. This video would be useful for a Secondary RE lesson on Science and Religion or Christian attitudes on Creation. We speak from a Christian perspective on behalf of the Churches of Kingston Upon Thames and we hope that this will be a helpful introduction to the concept of Science and Religion for your pupils. This is part 2 of a series on Science & Christianity including Evolution and The Big Bang. It could be run as a special event in your school. We would be happy to answer your student’s questions in person or by video call at the end of the session. Alternatively, you could interview a minister or representative from your local church after the session.

Key themes:

Some Christians believe the Earth is young in the thousands of years. While others believe in an older Earth in the billions of years based on scientific data. Which is it? Thousands or billions of years? What does the Bible say about six-day Creation and how should we interpret this account? What if we’re wrong about this? When does it matter and when is it not important?

For further reading see:

John Lennox: Seven Days That Divide The World
Review Here: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/themelios/review/seven-days-that-divide-the-world-the-beginning-according-to-genesis-and-sci/

Articles on Bethinking.com: https://www.bethinking.org/search?q=creation

What is Sin?

Insight, the Kingston Churches Schools Work explain the idea of sin from a Christian perspective in 4 minutes. This video would be a useful part of a discussion on sin in a lesson on Sin and Salvation for KS3/4. We will look at the meaning of the word today and compare the natural human condition of sin with the individual things people might do that break God’s law. These are the roots and the fruits of sin if you like. (See the video on Original Sin for the story of how sin entered the world.) In Christianity, sin is a condition that affects all people and leaves us separated from God. Therefore, sin is the biggest problem in the Bible - one that is ultimately only solved by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

What is Salvation?

Insight, the Kingston Churches Schools Work explain Christian Salvation in under 5 minutes. This video would be useful in a Religious Education lesson on Christianity: Sin and Salvation for KS3/4. We consider the connections between salvation and saving or rescue. What do Christians need God to save them from? Who is the Saviour? And how does he save people? We then turn to answer the 2 most common questions that follow: Why are only Christians saved? And Why is Jesus Christ the only person to make this offer? This video is told from a Christian perspective on behalf of the Churches of Kingston Upon Thames. We hope that this video will be a helpful way to introduce students to the concept of Christian salvation and that they can explore further by reading or watching here:

Christianity Explored: https://www.christianityexplored.org

The Gospel Coalition: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/?s=salvation

Speak Life: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJjwJMzkkVyXg3BNGUMcT0g

Christmas Assembly

(0)

Darryl from Insight, the Kingston Churches Schools Work, speaks about Christmas, in this engaging 12 minute video available for you to use for free in your school assemblies. After thinking about a modern Christmas, we look at the Christian Christmas Story and reflect on the coming from Heaven to Earth of the baby Jesus Christ. We ask the questions: Who is Jesus Christ? Why did he come here? And what did he do when he was here? Christmas is such a big festival in the church because it marks the time when the person of God the Son came to live among us as a baby. He came to fix our broken world and bring his people back into a right relationship with their God - one that will last forever. Not everything in our world has been fixed by the first coming of Jesus Christ but the work has begun in the lives of Jesus’ people and will ultimately come to it’s fulfilment when he comes back from heaven to earth for a second time. This video is told from a Christian perspective on behalf of the churches of Kingston Upon Thames and we hope that you will find it a helpful introduction to the concepts of Christmas and the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Science & Christianity: Evolution

(0)

Darryl from Insight, the Kingston Churches Schools Work shares some Christian thinking about the Theory of Evolution.
This is part of a series on Science & Christianity which could be run as a special event in your school. We would be happy to answer your student’s questions in person or by video call at the end of the session. Alternatively, you could interview a minister or representative from your local church after the session.

Key themes:

The Bible states that God created the world and all the different species of plants and animals but the atheist claim is that life developed naturally without God. This has massive implications for the human race. Either we are made in the image of God or we are just another animal. Although some Christians believe that God uses evolution as a tool to create animals, the concept of natural selection attempts to remove the necessity of having a Creator. In the end, the discussion boils down to this question: Is there a God or not? For Christians, belief in a Creator provides a satisfying solution to the origin of life. Life comes at the command of someone powerful outside our world. Without a Creator, we are still left with the question of how life started in the first place? Philosophically, how can something that is dead, come to life on its own? This process is not clearly understood. Scientists have created DNA in a lab by copying a pre-existing design but they have not yet created an artificial cell. Even if they could, we would still need to show that this could happen naturally without a mind to control it. Until this is more clearly understood, atheists appear to be demonstrating faith or belief in the idea that there is no Creator, while Christians are demonstrating faith in the idea that there is a Creator. The most important thing for a Christian is not evolution but being with God forever in Heaven. God makes this possible through faith in Jesus Christ, even if we don’t understand evolution.

For further reading try: https://www.bethinking.org/search?q=evolution

Speak Life Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJjwJMzkkVyXg3BNGUMcT0g

What is the Trinity?

Kingston Church Schoolsworker Darryl clearly explains what the Bible teaches about the Trinity in 5 minutes. This video is suitable for a Secondary lesson on the Trinity. The three persons of God are the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and The Holy Spirit. But there is only one God. Three persons, each fully God, united in one being.

Insight is a multi-denominational partnership of 14 churches in the boroughs of Kingston and Richmond upon Thames.
