ESL/EAL Level Placement Test

USE: This is a short test that is particularly useful for grouping ESL/EAL students into levels or if they did not go through previous assesment and their level is uncertain. Alternatively, it could be used to understand if and wher the student has gaps in their foundation. SCOPE This test is focused on lower level learners, CEFR A1-B1. If a student has a perfect score, a B1 level can be assumed. However, verbal assessment must accompany for a more accurate placement. DETAILS This test combines gap filling, multiple choice and open ended paragraph questions. Paragraph questions are good indicators of language ability, please encourage your students to ‘‘show off’’ their language skills at these points. Depending on the students writing speed, test should take between 20-35 minutes. It is highly suggested that you follow up (or begin with) a speaking activity. CONTENTS This pack includes the test in .doc and .pdf form and answer sheet. It is worth noting that the answer sheet includes sample answers that demonstrate what an A2 an B1 answer can look like to help less experience teachers.
