Baseline Assessment for beginning of Y1

This assessment can be used in the first weeks of Autumn term Year 1 to help assess where your class are in Maths and Writing.

I find that after the summer lots of pupils coming up to Year 1 have forgotten some of their writing and maths skills of the summer break. This simple assessment allows you to get a quick snapshot of where they’re at after their 6 week holiday.

Writing assessment:

Children write their name.

Reading sounds out loud and teacher ticks off/notes down corrections.

Teacher says the letter and pupil writes it.

I ask the pupil to draw a pig and label it. This is a good opportunity to assess their cvc writing skills.

Teacher makes a note of their dominant hand and whether they use a tripod grip.

Maths assessment:

Pupil reads out numbers.

Teacher reads out numbers and pupil writes them. Formation check.

Naming 2D shapes

Ask the pupil to count out different amounts using cubes/bears/counters.

What can they count up to?
