Y2 Science - habitat - compare two different habitats

(0)

This lesson aims to compare the habitat of a badger and a beaver and to consider the environmental threats these animals may face.

The lesson is designed for a Y2 class studying Living Things Habitats. The scientific skills addressed are comparing habitats and learning key scientific vocabulary.

The lesson is accompanied by a text ‘Beaver Saves The Day’ and a worksheet ‘Habitat’ and a Power Point which leads the teacher through the lesson. There is also a separate lesson plan. There is an open extension for children who complete the work sheet.

The lesson starts with the teacher reading a fictional story ‘Beaver Saves The Day’ which is a story about a beaver helping a badger whose home has flooded.

The children then view (on Power Point) a collage of diferent habitats. They can say which habitat they think the badger might live in and which habitat the beaver might live in.

The lesson then looks at the two different animals, badger and beaver with a video link to view the habitat of each animal.

The children then complete a simple worksheet (with a word bank) to compare the two different habitats.

As an extension, some children may wish to write down how each habitat may face different environmental threats (such as flooding, plastic pollution etc).

The children finish the lesson using talk partners to think about questions they wish to research independently to find out more about these animals and their habitats.
