TOOLKIT: A Manual for Child-led Creative Placemaking
This groundbreaking toolkit for Primary schools has been produced by Turner Contemporary (Margate) and Turner Prize-winning arts/architects’ collective, Assemble and published by Five10Twelve for CulturalPlacemaking.
The toolkit include more than 30 activities, creative/play-based sessions, warm-up sessions and reflective exercises which support and empower young children to:
Develop critical thinking and research skills
Build confidence, self-expression and leadership skills
Connect with and explore their home town and its heritage
Understand the built environment and think about how towns work
Think about the role of art, public art and creativity
Develop and express civic pride / pride in place
The Manual for Child-led Placemaking builds on learning and sessions delivered through an 18 month project, led by Assemble and Turner Contemporary, which culminated in two groups of primary schoolchildren developing a brief, interviewing and commissioning world-renowned artist, Conrad Shawcross, to produce a new public art sculpture to their brief for their hometown.
