This resource contains a range of tests covering alphabetic and phonic knowledge. It’s designed for teachers who want to check these aspects for their learners, but it’s perfectly suitable for home-schoolers or other parents who are working with their own children. All fonts are suitable for primary school use. We’d recommend that you print out the instructions and recording forms on paper, but print your choice of student materials on white A4 card. It’s a good idea to laminate these to keep them looking nice. Materials can be printed in black and white or, preferably, in colour.

This Rhyme Set is suitable for any teacher or parent who is teaching phonological awareness. The Rhyme Set enables you to create a huge range of rhyming activities and games. It includes a comprehensive instruction handout with teaching instructions and game ideas for a variety of rhyme games and activities. However, picture cards can be used for many purposes and game ideas include suggestions for memory, phonemic awareness and language development. The set includes: Two complete sets of rhyming pictures (40 or 44 cards in each set) Two sets of rhyming word sets Two sets of word cards which correspond to the pictures Two sets of printable bingo boards which can be used with the picture sets Detailed set of teaching instructions and game ideas All pictures are detailed and colourful, but they’re not babyish! Images are specifically created to cater for older learners who still need help with phonological awareness.

Wipe-clean gameboards, which can be used with a variety of resources, give you a fantastic range of options. Print these out on A3 card and laminate them. Then, you can write on them with an OHP pen (or similar) and just wipe it clean with a damp tissue or cloth when you've finished. Each of these gameboards comes with teaching ideas and game suggestions. These can be printed as separate pdfs. I'm sure you'll think of hundreds of other ideas, though! These gameboards can be used with any age of learner.

This is intended to be used with learners who are learning the following: To distinguish between short vowel sounds (auditory discrimination/vowel sound awareness) To encode regular CVC words To encode regular short vowel words with initial and end blends CONTENTS The pack consists of the following Word list sheets, which provide suggested words for teachers to use at each level Learner Sound Skills Sheets Learner Record Sheet DIFFERENTIATION Teachers can select vowel sound combinations and also whether to use CVC words or include initial and/or end blends. The Resource Pack can be used as a structured course, which starts with two relatively easily distinguished vowel sounds and works up to more difficult combinations and finally 5 vowel sounds together. Alternatively, a teacher can choose to select particular vowel sound combinations according to the learner’s needs. This is suitable as a 1:1 activity or group/class work.

Many learners struggle to develop phonological awareness and this can have a huge effect on literacy. One aspect is auditory discrimination, which is the ability to tell the difference between similar sounds. Other aspects of phonological awareness are perceptual. In other words, it’s not what the ears are hearing, it’s how the brain is making sense of what the ears are hearing. However, auditory discrimination can be perceptual or have a physical cause. Many younger learners suffer from glue ear (otitis media), which affects hearing. If this isn’t identified and, if necessary, remediated, there can be an ongoing effect on the development of phonological awareness. This screening test will: - Identify if there is a problem - Identify which sounds are causing difficulties - Analyse results to see if there is an underlying pattern (end sounds, initial blends, for example) - Provide a way of checking progress - Provide some guidelines about when a learner should be referred for further investigation by an audiologist or similar. Please note, this is not intended as an in-depth diagnostic tool. No screening test of this nature should replace assessment by a trained specialist. This is simply intended as a quick and easy way for parents or teachers to identify difficulties and provide guidance. This test has been widely used in NZ and has been checked and approved by a number of audiologists and speech-language specialists. The test can be used with any age from 5 (depending on concentration!) and full instructions are included. Note: Other useful resources in this range include picture cards and aural activities.

This is a collection of high-quality images which can be printed out as a card set. It is intended to be used as a resource for teaching auditory syllabification and the resource includes extensive game ideas and suggestions. All of the pictures are originals and are detailed, but not childish. This means they can be used with older learners without patronising them. The resource includes a set of the corresponding word cards, which can be used in a variety of ways, including as a matching game to develop vocabulary for English language learners. There are 25 pictures in total - 5 each of one, two, three, four and five syllable words.

This is one pack from the Rhyme Set, which is separately listed. It includes one pack of rhyming pictures, plus the teaching instructions and game ideas from the full Rhyme Set. Please note, the instructions and game ideas includes the additional resources which are included in the Rhyme Set, as well as this rhyme pack. I’ve included it because it gives a good idea of the additional options available if you have or create bingo boards and word cards.

This is intended to be used with learners who are at the early stages of literacy or are struggling with literacy. There are many full diagnostic tests for phonological awareness, but these are usually expensive and can be quite time-consuming for schools. They are also often restricted. This resource is just intended to be a quick and easy screening test which will identify difficulties with some of the main aspects of phonological awareness which affect literacy. There is a checklist included, which can be used to make a summary record for a particular student and to monitor progress. We would recommend using a range of resources to address any difficulties which have been identified. Picture and game resources can be particularly effective - and enjoyable.
