Adaptations to the environment science biology animals lesson designing an animal

This is a complete lesson, for upper KS2 or KS3 science, about how animals are adapted to their environments.

The powerpoint introduces students to key adaptations in the animal kingdom, and the idea that each adaptation comes with a trade-off. For the activity, children will create a drawing of their animal, perhaps including its habitat. They will then explain the adaptations of their animal to the habitat. The worksheet is differentiated three ways, with instructions on the powerpoint and beneath the learning objective on the worksheet.

This was delivered to a year 6 class, who really enjoyed it. The input is a little long, so I tried to incorporate a bit of drama mid-way to get them moving (e.g. acting out an adaptation). I would STRONGLY encourage you to get children to make notes on a whiteboard/peice of paper/back of their books etc, so they can reference the adaptations during the independent work.
