The lead prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, liked Guede’s story about Knox and Sollecito being in on it and forming a conspiracy to murder Kercher. Unlike in America, in Italy prosecutors enter right into the case from the start. They are allowed to interrogate witnesses and need not leave that up to the police. So the prosecutor himself was interrogating them.
Mignini formed his own theory that Knox was a she devil, Sollecito was her dupe, and that the two of them helped murder Kercher for sexual reasons. He developed this theory of a she-devil while conveniently overlooking that there was no reliable forensic evidence against Knox or Sollecito. Mignini warmed to a theory that Knox was capable of a special, female duplicity, that she was “dirty on the inside.”
Yet there was not one physical trace from them on the body. There were none of their fingerprints or reliable DNA collected by the forensic team. But Italian criminologists were willing to back the prosecutor up on the witness stand by stating that because the body had been covered with a blanket, the killer was surely female because such an act was evidence of feminine “pieta.”
