GCSE AQA Chemistry C1.3 Distillation
A complete lesson including exam questions, introduction to distillation and a practical.
Worksheet adapted from the AQA distillation practical. Student practical worksheet includes learning outcomes, method and then summary questions. Aim: Distillation can be used to extract chemicals from natural substances to be used in perfumes.
Distillation will be used here to extract Limonene from orange peel.

Main:
- Student investigation. Distillation to extract Limonene from orange peel. The setup of the distillation apparatus should be demoed first by the teacher. It is advisable for students to work in groups of 3. Students should set up apparatus, this should then be checked by the teacher before Bunsen burners are turned on. Students to complete the practical and then scientifically smell their products.
- Students to pack up and be sat down after the practical. How distillation works can now be discussed (animation can be used). Key words boiling point will need to be defined.
Plenary:
Students to complete the summary section of the practical sheet.
Practical: Distillation of citrus peel.
