To clarify meaning and avoid ambiguity
To separate items in a list or series
To separate direct speech from a reporting clause
To separate a subordinate / dependent clause/ fronted adverbial from a main clause
Before co-ordinating conjunctions – for, an, nor, but, or, yet, so
To mark parenthesis, embedded clauses, relative clauses
To indicate direct address, to set off yes and no and tag questions from the rest of the sentence
To mark thousands in numbers.
