CVC word/picture Matching Sets a e i o u

What’s included?
x10 sheets (picture and word cards) for CVC words focusing on a, e, i, o and u. Split into x5 sets of x20 cards (x10 pictures and x10 words per set). Portrait orientation, pdf format.

What’s it for?
This CVC phonics/reading practise activity set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.

How to use it?
An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted guide lines make where to cut clear). Each set (a/e/i/o/u) is a different colour to avoid cards becoming mixed and to help finding a relevant matching card easier.

A set (or more than one set!) of these cards can be placed on a carpet/table top and learners read each word by sounding out the individual phonemes, they then match this to the picture from the same set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.

The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phases 2 and 3 but mainly Phase 2.

• Red (Set a)
  cat/crab/map/pan/mat/van/hat/bat/bag/cap

• Orange (Set e)
  peg/bell/hen/red/bed/dress/web/ten/yes/pen

• Yellow (Set** i**)
  fig/zip/pig/lips/pink/pip/wig/stick (may be confused with ‘twig’)/pin/bin

• Green (Set** o**)
  shop/rock/frog/clock/cogs/pot (also ‘hot!’) /box/socks/fox/dog

• Blue (Set** u**’)
  bun (may be confused with ‘cake’ or ‘cupcake’ though in Yorkshire (where I am from!) this is a ‘bun’!) duck/cup/truck/slug/sun/bug/plug/hut/mug
