In his artist-quotes Cy Twombly expresses his love for ancient Greek art and history and describes himself as a Romantic Symbolist. He showed also his admiration for Jackson Pollock and Miro. Of course he made many classical mythological references, frequently in the titles of his works.

Twombly was of a generation American painters who created their art after the first period of Abstract Expressionism. In 1951 the young Twombly met Robert Rauschenberg, who encouraged him to attend Black Mountain College, in North Carolina, United States. There he studied with American artists as Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell; he met John Cage the composer, who inspired him a lot. Later in his life he developed a more symbolic image language; he then made many sculptures and series of photos.
