This resource provides a deeper look at colour as part of the elements of art.
‘Combining Colour’ consists of a PowerPoint presentation which builds on the basic colour theory and language covered in ‘Colour 1’ to include contrasting/complementary and harmonious colours, tertiary colour wheel, warm and cool colours, and the effect of colour on situation, style and mood in a piece of artwork, accompanied by extensive teachers’ notes and multiple worksheets covering the application of this knowledge.

The resource can be delivered as a single or multiple lesson depending on ability and time.

The completed worksheets can be added to students sketch books to provide useful reference for future study and evidence of learning.

The resource consists of:

‘Combining Colour’ PowerPoint presentation covering colour theory in relation to how colours are used and work together. Includes, recap of knowledge in ‘Colour 1’, moving on to applying this knowledge through contrasting/complementary and harmonious colours, including tertiary colour mixing. Also covering the use of colour to create mood, atmosphere or style for a given situation, including, warm and cool colours.

Pdf of teachers notes for each page/item of the presentation. This provides explanation and background information to enable the teacher, even if not an art expert, to understand and deliver the lesson. Also included in this are suggestions for ways in which these activities can fulfil curriculum requirements and objectives.

Set of 6 worksheets covering activities for all ages and abilities in the primary age group.

• Combining colour – contrasting/complementary and harmonious colours – students use knowledge of contrasting/complementary and harmonious colours to fill in each of the identical patterns on the sheet.

  • 2 sheets featuring different designs to colour. Choose which suits your lesson.
    • Leaves or striped pattern.
      • Tertiary colour wheel – 12 segment colour wheel for students to complete with their own secondary and tertiary colour mixes. Primary and secondary segments are labelled to aid correct positioning of the mixes. Definitions included.
      • Harmonious colour combinations – a sheet of 3 bars featuring 3 sections each for students to fill in with their choice of harmonious combinations. An ideal accompaniment to the tertiary colour mixing exercise or as a task on its own. Students are also asked to name their colours by hue to embed colour vocabulary.
      • Colour in mood/situation – These sheets enable students to apply their colour knowledge to build on a basic tree drawing to create different situations, mood or atmosphere.
  • 2 sheets:
  • 1 featuring four identical tree pictures for students to complete as each of the four seasons.
  • 1 featuring a single A4 tree for students to complete. This could be as a single season as instructed or other situations and moods, such as different weather conditions e.g. sunny, raining, cold, and stormy.

All have many visual examples and opportunities for class discussion and participation. • PDF of teachers notes to accompany the PPT offering explanations and tips to hopefully make the lesson as effective as possible, even for those without an art background. • 1 or more PDF worksheets for students to complete to consolidate and develop the knowledge and skills gained from the lesson. Completed worksheets can be added to sketchbooks and used for future reference and evidence of learning within the art curriculum. • PDF teachers’ notes for worksheets listing the materials needed and explaining the tasks involved to complete them, along with ideas for task extension and challenge.
